Insights from Historical Artwork Four
fascinating glimpses into six types of traditional styles of early Renaissance weapon
training in Germany. From top left to right, Halbert, Messr (with unusual curved points),
kanzestange (short staff), Bidenhänder (two-handed sword), dagger, and finally sword and
buckler. Note wide and low stances not typically associated with European weaponry (but
which HACA has been practicing successfully for sometime). Note the passing stepping
actions and large, powerful movements. Note also the light footgear. With the sword &
buckler, notice the lunge-like stances and the unique high-outside right ward (a very
effective position with this style and similar to Finestra or Window guard with the
long-sword).
