What do I bring?

Required Items

Clothing

  • Uniforms:ARMA members are expected to show up in uniform (red shirt, black pants). Others are encouraged to wear white shirts and black sweat- or athletic pants. If no such colors are available, please come in a very minimum of rugged athletic clothing.
  • Shoes: Comfortable athletic shoes are a must.
  • Gloves: If you sweat a lot or blister easily, we also recommend comfortable light leather, driving, fencing, biking, or weightlifting gloves.

Equipment

  • Wasters: A longsword waster will be required. If you don't have a waster and can't afford one, you'll need a 48" long, 1-¼" diameter hardwood dowel. These are cheap and available at any lumber store.

We will have a limited number of wasters to loan, but we can't promise availability. Therefore please bring a dowell regardless. First-time attendees will get first pick of loaner equipment. Please no bokken, shinai, SCA, or similar weapons.

Optional and Encouraged

  • Water: Water will be available. Consider bringing bottled water or a suitable container for convenience.
  • Outdoor Protection: If weather permits (not rainy or excessively hot), we may train outdoors. Therefore we strongly encourage sunscreen, sunglasses, etc.
  • Books and Manuals: Because the ARMA study method relies heavily on the writings of the historical masters, all are encouraged to bring along any print rescources they have, especially if they are seeking help in interpretation.
