Well, we have found the best method is holding the actual edge in a joint and not applying much force there. Halfsword is really like using the sword as a shield. Since you are applying the force of the blow to the flat (in the worst kind of parry if you cant deflect the force) the flat should be on...

I can see people debating over whether or not a hit was good enough to call and how every now and then a good hit won't get called. But how often do you let a completely inadequate hit get called good? I was looking through some of my old posts and found this. I appologize Mr Welch for not respondi...

Re: Gloves?

I like these: http://www.galls.com/style.html?style=TE383&assort=general_catalog Let me just say that i use and love these gloves... They have saved me not a few times. They have the JEREMY STAMP of approval! Also, they have this nifty slit on the forefinger that allows you to free the finger f...

The questions you pose here are good ones but have already been answered several times throughout the forum. My thought is that its not so much "what is better" as it is evolution. The longsword was designed for specific uses during specific timeperiods. Was the sword and shield combinatio...

I think whether something's a good hit or not really depends on the context.... is it a duel to death, or to first blood... are the parties in tropical area where clothes were thin and minimal, or in cold area where thick clothes were common. These all contribute to different judging standard. I've...

My wife and i have found that pell work and training with masks really help. I generally use the same tactics in teaching a woman as i would teaching a younger student.... fight as if you were protecting something you love. That and removing the fear of the weapon helps greatly. I think men grow up ...

Re: WMA vs. Western Weight Training.

And these pics are all great, but its not a question of "did they weight train?" so much as it is degree. In reading a Knight and his Weapons, by mr Oakeshotte himself, makes several points about the larger more "Goliath" type person being the exception not the rule. It is just c...

Shields

I recently got in a discussion on shields with a few of my peers. They are SCA folks and insist that steel shields are "period." I have heard this statement before, but have read plenty that says different. (leather, wood, even thrushes... not iron or steel.) but why is this? Too heavy? Th...

Re: Teacher Strikes

Well when we do drills we dont just do them standing still. I think all the masterstrikes give instruction on the fundamentals. To perform them properly you have to have timing/distance/footwork/a good sense of blade geometry. In order to perform shiller properly for instance you need all these. If ...

Re: Teacher Strikes

My point is though that werent most of the manuals built as instructional guides? If Doebringer says this is all you need, well again thats not very specific.... this is all you need in a fight? or this is all you need to work on when i am not around? I think this issue can be approached a few ways....

Re: Teacher Strikes

Meaning that all the finer points can be taught inherently through these cuts. After you teach someone proper timing for zornhaus (or any mcut really) then you have taught them indes, sword deflection, and triangle step as well. So why teach them one at a time when one lesson covers all three in a p...

In reference to what part exactly? Or just the situation in general? And frustration imo is usually caused by presentation.

Teacher Strikes

Hello again friends. I have been in a good position lately to instruct a wide range of individuals on the basics i know of longsword (mainly from Ringeck) and fell into a discussion that led to what i believe is an interesting thought/viewpoint. I am sure we have all encountered, or even been oursel...

That makes perfect sense Szab. I look forward to putting that spin on it. It never stops amazing me how so much of this is so obvious and simple and yet i am constantly faced with new info i feel i never would have thought of. It makes one appreciate the community all the more.

Re: Demonstration advise?

Yeah, not cool when you are trying to prove the validity of your art and you get whipped by buffalos in front of everyone.... I try and do the opposite. When people at fairs are putting on demos and have freeplay i go out like i know nothing and halfsword/mastercut like theres no tomorrow. <img src=...
