Re: Beginners questions, basic cuts, footwork

Jean-Luc, My wife is from Brittany and we travel to St. Lunaire every year to visit family. I also have a brother-in-law in Rennes and inlaws in other areas of Brittany. This year we are leaving in May for France and I will be there for about two and a half weeks. If you are interested in chatting, ...

Re: Defeated by rapier...

Shane, your distinction between stopping power and "killing" power is a very good one. That distinction and the information provided by Michael caused me to think about the similarities between a rapier thrust and a bullet strike to the human body and how those similarities might help bett...

Re: The Bodkin Arrow vs. Plate

The distances you quote for penetration of armour correspond with what I have read in other sources as well. Even at 20 or 30 meters, however, if the arrow did not strike the armour plate near perpendicular, it would bounce off. At those ranges the archers would aim for the slits in the helmets and ...

Re: The Bodkin Arrow vs. Plate

Amen. The English yeoman archers shot for the horse, not the rider. Put the armoured knight on foot and he is much more manageable. Break the knee to knee formation of a well executed medieval cavalry charge, and it becomes more manageable. Could the English war bow (longbow is a later creation and ...

Re: Early Spanish Colonization

Francisco Pizarro's conquest of the Incas is also interesting and fairly well parallels that of the Aztecs. Pizarro landed in Peru with a large number of soldiers ( I do not recall how many) and was at first thought to be a god the Incas had been expecting for some time. Apparently the fact he was r...

Re: A Question on Roman man to man fighting.

There is little question the Romans took much from the Celts over the years. We tend to think of Rome and the Celts in terms of Caesar's conquest of the Gauls (Celts) when in fact Caesar's eight year campaign was the final series of battles in a conflict that had been going on for about 340 years. T...

Re: Padded Swords

I thank you all very much for the very helpful input on padded swords. It gives me the information I needed to go forward with obtaining/making a padded sword. I have also ordered a waster from New Sterling Arms. I do not mean for this post to end the thread. Other comments are most welcome. Thanks ...

Padded Swords

Everyone has a first post, and this is mine. I am relatively new to WMA and am in the process of pulling together the equipment I will need to train and practice. While researching where to obtain equipment, I found that PurpleHeart Armoury sells padded swords. Given the depth and breadth of experie...
