Re: Fat no defense

The idea isn't that the fat will protect as such. The thing is that a shallow cut will cut the fat, rather than sever muscle tissue and tendons.

Re: A question

Seems I worded my reply badly. I meant that some fight are over before they even start. Sorry for any offense or confusion.

Re: A question

Well, if you've ever done any serious stick fighting, you know it can be over very quickly... Very quickly indeed...

That would be this one: http://www.newstirlingarms.com/woodwasters-viking.html

A lovely waster, IMO.

Re: Wasters on a budget

Thanks. I've done a quick inventory in the shed. Seems I have the tools and equipment needed. But how about weight? I want to get as close to the real thing as I can, both in balance and weight.

Wasters on a budget

I want to obtain a waster(or prefferable more, for diversity), but I'm on a limited budget. The cheapest waster I found was 50 US, and I can barely make that. So, I was wondering if anyone has ever tried making their own wasters, and if so, what did you do, and how well did it "work"? Than...

Re: What is it about the Sword-and-Shield thing?

Well, the shield has it's uses if you know how to use it. And ducking behind it to ward of blows is not the way to do it...

Re: A question

The problem with the sagas is that they often have some embelishments that make it difficult to know if what you're reading about the fighting styles is correct. And often(at least in Snorre), it's just a matter of "...he swung at the foe, and cut him down."

Re: Sword length: finding a suitable blade

Thanks. And yes, upon closer research, I see I might have been mistaken. All my knowledge of swords and swordtypes come from various sourcebooks on medieval arms and armor. Sadly, some are not as accurate as others.

Sword length: finding a suitable blade

I wish to get more serious in my study of armed combat, using european blades. And ofcourse, I need a blade suitable for someone of my height. It won't do to practice with a blade that is too long, for example. Also, there is a question of style. I favor bastard swords, simply because of flexibility...

Re: Southpaw fencer

Hi there. I think I might have some advice that could help. You see, I use the left hand when writing or painting, all such activities. However, I use the right when practicing fencing and swordplay. I am even able to switch hands and use a southpaw stance, though I am markedly clumsier in my moves ...

A question

Hello there! I have a question that I hope is relevant. I have an interest in the fighting styles of the vikings(being a norwegian cultural nut...), and I was wondering if anyone here had any insights to offer. My own research has yielded little of use, mostly notes on the arms and armor they used. ...
