I was about to post a topic on this but figured I'd search for it first :p and found this. Netflix has it available for instant watching and I just watched it this evening and had no knowledge that John or anyone from ARMA was involved and then I saw him and said "Hey, I know that site! got to ...

Re: scabbards for zweihanders?

I have a question about whether there were scabbards for 2- handed swords like zweihanders or claymores. In all the pictures I have seen there is never a scabbard. But how would soldiers carry the swords when they were out marching? Where would they put their swords if they wanted to sit down? If t...

Hmm, maybe you misunderstood me. I know about formations and differences of the things like you mention and how it can greatly affect a battle. However what I want to know is that when people weren't in a close formation, when it was literally two lines just clashing into each other and such focused...

Re: An avg melee fight in a mass battle 12-15th century.

That's going to depend a lot on what kind of weapons the troops are using. Long cutting weapons do require more room to swing freely unless you choke up and go to half-sword, but spears and other thrusting weapons can let you maintain very tight formations while directing the threat at what's in fr...

Thanks, but that would still seem quite different to me. I mean with your fists/feet and such it wouldn't offer nearly the chance of accidental injury to your friends around your target as a glancing blow as a sword or such would seem, or the novelty that the soldiers are trained to fight, etc as th...

An avg melee fight in a mass battle 12-15th century.

I am just wondering if someone can give me a good rundown of what they would be like, as far as how the soldiers would engage other people and various tactics for melee only (not ranged or such). One thing that I've thought was that in mass combat, even with many other soldiers about on your side as...

Teutonic Knight's and horned/winged Helmets.

Having a discussion with someone and they believe that the Teutonic knight's really wore such helmets into battle. However it is my understanding and knowledge that such helmets throughout history were almost always ceromonial/parade helmets and not actual battle helmets since the horns/wings would ...

Longbow's piercing full Plate Armour.

I know this has been talked about before, but I'm wondering if there's any really good info on the net about the subject? I run into people allllll the time online that think longbows could easily pierce plate armour like a hot knife through butter when it's not really going to happen to a good quai...

Dying armour?

I was just wondering, can someone give me info on what colurs and how the armours were dyed? I have heard that plate armour was generally able to be coloured Black (via using oil/burning it into the material) , blue, and a gold'ish colour. How common was it for someone to dye their plate armour thes...

Re: Hans Talhoffer, A joke of a fencing master ?

Im now curious about the forum this is on. Is it a sword related forum? I cant imagine even some of the more un-informed forums allowing this kind of misinformation to go on for too long without multiple people correcting it. I know you may not want a bunch of us suddenly jumping on but perhaps som...

Re: Hans Talhoffer, A joke of a fencing master ?

That's what I said, as long as you aren't sliding your hand up and down the blade but more so just grasping it and then using it as instructed. He hasn't really gave me much of any sources to these things at all (said he would dig them up). As for non-edge, I'd assume he means the more blunt side of...

Re: Hans Talhoffer, A joke of a fencing master ?

Still can't convince him otherwise... He's resting that most examples are using the non-edge of the swords, but a sharp double edge would be impossible unless you want to lose fingers/get cut easily. His followup "Force applied to the broad side of the blade, or parallel to it's edge is not dan...

Hans Talhoffer, A joke of a fencing master ?

Hello, new to the forums <img src="/forum/images/icons/smile.gif" alt="" />, been using the arma for years but finally decided to register to make this post. I was having a discussion with someone on another forum about Hans Talhoffer. Basically I was using his combat manuals and...
