I know Ernie Perez did some work with the spear a few years ago. After watching him and sparring against his spear I made one up myself. The only problem I had was that to pad it adequately I found that the tip would sometimes fold. It also looked like a large canoe paddle. I recently had to toss it...

Jay,

I like your comments about the tool box. Not everything works for everyone. This is especially true for those of us of smaller stature and I sometimes lose sight of this fact.

Thanks to all who have contributed. I have much to think about.

dagger defense questions

I had to opportunity to do some unarmed against dagger work today with an old friend and a number of things came up in the process. First there is a tremendous size difference. I am 5'7" and weigh 126#'s. My friend is 6'2" and weighs 210#'s. I had been working on dagger techniques from Jay...

I have had fingers bashed by both types. At the international event, using wooden core weapons, I smashed a training partner's thumb and later got one of mine smashed. At a Houston training day I got a thumb mashed again. Both times it put me out of action for quite a while. I finally had to go to u...

Re: Simplified long sword fighting... and why.

David, Excellent post! I cannot tell you how this topic has weighed heavily on my mind in the study of other arts and WMA's. Things have been pretty well worked over but I have a few things to comment on: Jeanry Said: "My advice, and it might be bad advice so take it with a pinch of salt, I gue...

Re: Wasters on a budget

I've made over a dozen in various patterns. Making the guard seems to be the most challenging part. I have tried one piece, two piece and four piece designs. Of all of them the four piece design from the ARMA-Ogden webpage is the easiest to construct.

Thanks for the responses.

Does anyone have a design they favor for sparring dagger construction?

Re: Dagger Stabs

Martin,

Are you saying that the blade length should be from the base of the palm to the tip of the elbow? Just want to clarify as I am about to make some wooden and sparring roundels.

Re: Footgear in practice

You go out of town for Spring Break and look what happens! I have trained in my work boots, running shoes, sport sandals, bog shoes and barefooted. Here are my thoughts: If we want to simply train then use whatever gives you the best combination of comfort, stability and traction. If we want to go b...

felt armor?

My wife took a feltmaking class this last weekend. Now I am not talking about the thin felt you used for craft projects as a kid. She felted a pair of slippers that ended up being a bit less than 1/2" thick. One of her books said that felt was sometimes used for armor. This caused me to recall ...
