Re: North Western Ohio

Ah, ok, great! :D

Or, I can order one of each and we can explore the relative merits of both! :D

Re: North Western Ohio

I did notice there was an Italian design waster - more expensive, but maybe more an actual rapier? Probably should have the manual match the weapon, if we can. Then again, the cut-and-thrust looks sort of in between a longsword and a rapier, at least to me. So maybe good for both kinds of practice?

Re: North Western Ohio

So, I'm going to order Capoferro and Giganti both, so my friend and I can each read one and then trade. From the previews it seems much easier to understand and the rapier definitely appeals to us. We plan to practice the postures with sticks if we have to, then get the wasters to spar. Thank you, b...

Re: North Western Ohio

Thank you, that helps with both. I'm wanting the cut-and-thrust wooden waster sold by New Stirling Arms in the link David previously provided above. I'm assuming that would serve me well enough? This is more or less how I learned to write essays (and novels) and expand my vocabulary. One definition ...

Re: North Western Ohio

So I'm in the German section for the moment...

For instance, what is a bind? Locking blades? Or grabbing your opponent's sword with your hand? Or something else?

I'm guess that 'from the roof' means an overhand swing, or at least a blow from above-?

Re: North Western Ohio

I may need to spend some serious time browsing a dictionary because just a light dive in has left me like this :  :?: :| I'm even something of an English buff, but this was the passage that made my eyes cross: Mark when you will drive the Crooked hew then you must always therewith give openin...

Re: North Western Ohio

Also, I have no idea which 'discipline' I wish to pursue, because I know nothing about any of them, only that light straight swords and unarmored combat appeal to me most. I don't believe I'd do all that well heavily weighted down. I've dabbled in bullwhip and bow and used a flimsy but sharp scimita...

Re: North Western Ohio

Thank you, David. My goal is to find a group, for sure. I have no preconceptions other than knowing that I know very little. I'd prefer to have someone more knowledgeable correct me as I go, and I learn best by doing. I had a feeling the Cold Steel swords were inadequate. Thanks for the confirmation...

Re: North Western Ohio

According to what I gleaned from this site, most of what's commonly available on true medieval sword fighting is either incorrect or oversimplified... So is there an ARMA - approved starting manual? I wouldn't want to start off wrong, because 'an error in the beginning is an error indeed.' I looked ...

Re: North Western Ohio

I live below the Akron/Canton area. I'm very interested in becoming an ARMA member, but only know one other person who may be interested, so at this time I couldn't start a study group. I would like to associate with an established group within driving distance and I'm investigating my options. I'm ...
