I sometimes practice outside with my Albion Crecy and I have found that using a sharpened sword is good for keeping me more 'aware' of my surroundings, as well as the placement of my elbows and feet, thereby helping to keep my swings from continuing too far past the target and getting sloppy. Also I...

Did you use the ACOR orthopedic foam for the flats? Yes, I got some 1/8 " Microcell Puff sheets and glued them on. It really is a strong material. That reminds me that I wanted to ask if you have cut them flush with the edge-foam or if you let it stick over the edge at all. 1) It's probably a ...

Hi Jeanry, I made a PVC padded waster yesterday according to your how-to website instructions (with a few slight modifications to make the crossguard larger and less bendy and the pommel more stable), but it's definitely a little whippy, a little 'bouncy' is more accurate as the whole thing kind of ...

When I first read text translations and saw this I was very confused also. But I think it's just a dialect thing, or possibly that the German language wasn't standardized across the nation(s), maybe similar to why Meyer calls Germans "Teutschen" instead of "Deutschen". In modern ...

HEMA-related post on MetaFilter

There was a post on MetaFilter Monday on "occidental martial arts" with several of the relevant websites involved with various groups (including ARMA), sword manufacturers, and even some of the pictures and videos on the ARMA website. Not really much opinion or explanation there (some in t...

Re: Training equipment question

I have a model 2001 from them, it's essentially a stronger version of the 1999 model. It's more expensive, but I prefer the thicker and stiffer bib to give a little more protection for my throat.

Re: buckler

I just received this buckler in the mail last week, after ordering the Marozzo 13" buckler from Therion Arms: http://therionarms.com/reenact/therionarms_c910.html I am really pleased with the Arms&Armor buckler, as its slightly smaller size makes it easier for me to move through the gua...

Re: Mensur Fechten

There's an article in Financial Times magazine (why there I don't know) about kids still doing this in 2004.

'Was Sehrt, Das Lehrt' apparently doesn't apply to these guys.

Re: Question about Hatch and Galls gloves

I have used the Hatch gloves for a few months now and they are great for thumb protection. There are a couple of unshielded areas along the thumb side of the index finger and the felt/cotton liner gets pulled out easily, but they have great palm gripping surface. Just make sure that if you order the...

Re: Cut and thrust, Short sword lengths

Brian - Sorry for the confusion, actually I was thinking of I.33 for an example of the 'cut and thrust' sword as I was envisioning it; in Marozzo and especially Agrippa they show what I had thought of as a proto-rapier or sword-rapier (if that is even a real term) although I have gotten the impressi...

Re: My first training injury

I Just went to the Ortho doctor Monday after finishing about 2 months of physical therapy for fracturing my thumb sparring with wasters. I've strained and sprained and bonked my fingers before but wow! I have a new appreciation for how important for sword grip the strength and range of motion that i...

Cut and thrust, Short sword lengths

Hello, At the suggestion of Gene (some months ago, admittedly) I'm finally taking advantage of the forums to try to pick up a few things from people more experienced than me. I have a question about the length of the 'cut and thrust sword' and 'short sword', as I'm having trouble finding the average...
