I would also like to attend, but that depends on my Guard drill dates as well. I personally would prefer June as I am about to come off of a stateside deployment and would like to get back into a normal routine and of course purchasing necessary equipment.

I've been considering investing in a good gambeson. I just went through my first sparring session this past weekend, and I took a good shot to the gut and a hefty thrust to the elbow. I'm going to get a hold of some elbow pads but I've seen Schola Gladiatora (in their videos) use gambesons, vests, a...

Excellent find! With everything going on in the mideast today, I believe that it is important to understand the history of the past events that have helped to lead up to all of the current events. I would like to see the spread of certain religions along with the empires on this map to help illustra...

Not trying to hijack the thread here, and I do appreciate Will's words of warning, as you can never be too careful with whom you get instruction from (the fencing school I mean), just wanted to point out how I felt this group was legitimate enough to try to study with. As for the Historical Fencing,...

Well, I found this stuff here: padded sword (kinda expensive) http://store.sportswordstore.com/spgelo.html modifying a bamboo sword http://www.fioredeiliberi.org/equipment/ (scroll down to where it says SHINAI) I have signed up for Historical Fencing classes at the Virginia Academy of Fencing, and t...

Something to also consider (besides the technology which has already been thoroughly discussed by others here) is the human factor. I remember reading that ARMA is also committed to the militaristic study of this period's combat, so I present that here. The battlefield is loud; and you are surrounde...

It's your choice. I see that at the top of the page, there is a description about wasters being made out of hickory (which is good), yet the actual product description cites that this is made out of oak. Oak is a bit stiffer than hickory I believe. Check this out for some info on hardwoods used in w...

I'm new as well, and I own two wasters right now. I own a two handed longsword waster made from Windlass Steelcraft that I got from http://www.swordsofhonor.com/index.html . It's under $50 but I can tell a difference between that one and a bastard sword waster that I got from http://www.newstirlinga...

Re: Question about Talhoffer's terminology

I've got a question about some terminology that I've seen in "Medieval Combat" originally by Talhoffer. In plate 23, the figure on the left is using a guard that looks like a drooping Ochs and Talhoffer calls it a "weak" guard, whereas the figure on the right is considered using...
