I assisted the British guys in preparing for the pollaxe combat - I'm pleased how well they both did, considering how little time they had to prepare!

Yo! What Mark said above. :) If you can find a place where it is cheap to live but there are lots of people wanting to pay money to learn historical fencing, then you may be in luck. It's not easy to do that in the UK though, due to the cost of living, and most full-time fencing teachers I can think...

Well yes, a generation - of course a lot can change in one generation (for example, look at how much armour changes between 1340 and 1370). Mid-13thC: http://www.fioredeiliberi.org/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core.ShowItem&g2_itemId=11974 If you're really interested in this topic then you need to ...

Yes, it is a Sudanese Kaskara, without any doubt, most likely dating to c.1870-1900, when a lot of these were brought back to Europe after the wars against the Islamic forces of the Mahdi.

They are quite easy to find in militaria shops and auctions here in the UK.

Putting freak earlier occurrences aside, you can say that two-handed 'longswords' do start to appear in art with some frequency (although always far less than one-handed swords) from around 1200-1250 onwards. 'Longswords' were at their most popular, in art, between c.1370 and c.1440 - this being rea...

Hi all, I locked down that challenge because it looked hostile and bitter, rather than a gentlemanly and sensible. I have no problem at all with hostile challenges in general, but Martial Challenge is young, and at the moment we are trying to build up a foundation of example bouts on which to intere...

At Auburn University of Montgomery we read a book that covered the battle of Cowpens, a battle fought during the revolutionary war. The primary accounts of the battle mentioned the sabre wounds inflicted by the calvary. It amazed me how useless the sabre was at killing with cuts. It did no more dam...
