Yes, it's for real. I've spoken to him personally about it, and he's quite serious. Though the kickstarter has officially "timed out," or whatever, the project can still continue on, if I understand correctly. I believe he's studying with a HEMA group up in Washington currently, so I know ...

Re: Keep reading..

Also be aware that there are hurt feelings and bad blood between some individuals within the overall Historic European Martial Arts community and some opinions and statements are colored by this. Try to see through and past this as you pursue our art. One other thought. There really is nothing like...

For the most part I've been trying to use anything that shows longsword use if it has illustrations since I don't feel I have enough experience or knowledge to practice from only written manuals. So anything you have that teaches longsword would be awesome. Who wrote it doesn't really matter to me ...

Hi Nathan, What manuals are you trying to work from? The number of translations online these days has been multiplying, and I may have a few links to manual translations that might help you out. I've also done a few of my own, mostly Paulus Hector Mair, which I could forward to you, depending on wha...

This is great. I'm moving from the middle-of-nowhere to San Diego CA. I'll definitely check this out. San Diego's a bit f a drive, but it's not impossible. We have someone driving down from Apple Valley (a similar length drive) and someone from Encinitas (which is essentially next to San Diego). Le...

I'm personally in Costa Mesa. Our group meets on or around the Cal State Fullerton campus or else in Irvine--so we are pretty close over here. We usually meet Wednesday nights, Friday afternoons, and quite a few Saturdays, but the schedule is occasionally sporadic. We're not an ARMA group, BTW, just...

Is this Anaheim, California, by any chance? I'm not sure if you updated your location yet on the sidebar under your name. But if it is California, you're right around the corner.

Re: Interested in WMA and Dont Know What to Start With

I am interested in doing WMA and don't know whether to start with a longsword or arming sword to get the basics of swordplay down. I have purchased a fechtbuch by Christian Henry Tobler That focuses on longsword but also has sections on Sword and Buckler, wrestling and half-swording. Any assistance...

Just some resources I've found handy: http://www.hroarr.com I haven't been back for a while, but it's got a lot of links and, as I remember, products (possibly reviews). and http://www.hemaalliance.com This is my group's site. There's a great list of online manuals, plus a few articles and reviews a...

yeah, it's always cheaper at budk than coldsteel, and usually cheaper elsewhere. Which is good b/c budk does price wars, yeah it is cheaper but i the quality is also cheap.... Ummm.....no. BudK in general only sells SLO (Sword Like Objects). However, on a product like this you get the same quality ...

But still, I wouldn't go so far as to say that any application of a tournament setting automatically makes what they're doing crap. I never said it was crap. I said it was extremely divergent from the goals of ARMA, and I was responding to this statement of the original poster, "i think this i...

There may be some just concern about 'sportification' but that line is a bit fuzzy in regards to resurrecting western martial arts of the Renn, Baroque and Medieval. Since the intent is not to kill with these weapons it is a form of sport or art...it's more a matter of degree than being non kindred...

Found the Mike Loades video, interesting effect... http://www.youtube.com/user/SergejKorolev#p/u/25/omJSE9VLv60 I, too, would be disinclined to excessive criticism here. They seem to be hitting with less force than needed to penetrate armor, but I suspect that they're trying to exercise control to ...

So it would seem that for a flail to be effective, either the rotation would confuse the adversary so that a ward would be missed, or it would have to break the weapon of the adversary. And the idea about stopping the rotation makes sense, same problem arises for those who watch too many movies in ...

As I think about it, since it's semi-on-topic (though i know o already have a waster, Amanda), Dave Rawlings has some fairly decent (from what I hear) nylon wasters on pre-order for something like $57 US. Check out this link: http://www.theknightshop.co.uk/catalog/swords-nylon-waster-sparring-swords...
