Re: William Hope's method of thrusting

Thank you! That made perfect sense to me. I knew that Hope was more concerned with getting home alive than sending the other guy home in a casket. So thrusting from the hanging guard is not really strong, but that is not the point. Thank you for a very clear and understandable explination. Now I und...

Re: William Hope's method of thrusting

Thanks, it kind of helps. but my original question still stands. Is there a simple explination for the best way to thrust from this position? Would looking at Silver help here? Or is there some great difference that would change the dynamics? To my inexperienced eye, the point is held pointing so lo...

Re: William Hope's method of thrusting

Stuart wrote, "Don I would be happy to offer an interpretation. Hope is pretty easy once you are familiar with fencing terminology." "The BIG difference between the two guards is that Hope's guard closes the line of attack against a reverso whilst inviting a mandritta and Silver's gua...

William Hope's method of thrusting

Hi, I have Mark Rector's book on Highland SWordsmanship. In it, there is the text by William Hope called the New Method of Fencing. Hope mainly revolves around the use of the hanging guard, or secondary guard as he sometimes calls it. I can figure out the methods of defense from this guard, but chap...

Re: NY State bans all non-approved MA competetitio

I have to agree with Shane. Good-niks irritate me.

But what about sport fencing and SCA? I did not see them on this list of the "approved" groups. Here is a link to the text of the law itself.

NY State bans all non-approved MA competetitions!

Found this on another forum I frequent. New york bans all non-approved competition events The short story is that if your name is not on the "approved" list of orginizations, you can not have open competition as part of your event. As you can imagine, not only can this cause problems with ...

Competitive changes in tournament fighting

I was wondering what is known about any changes that may have been made to WMA in general, and swordsmanship in particular, once tournaments and other contests became popular. If you look at "combat" sports today, they all have rules and those rules differ a little from reality. And when y...

Daggers & such

I was wondering if daggers in the medieval age were used for cutting, or were almost exclusivly thrusting instruments. I ask because I have noticed that the edge does not seem to be used at all in the stuff that I have seen. And today I was reading the Codex Wallerstein and saw that the dagger was s...

Re: Half Speed Sparring

"in order to BEST benefit from it, the participants need to understand the FULL Speed actions.. so they know the actual realistic follow-thru actions that do take place when you strike at someone... It is really easy to recover from a half speed swing.. but to do so gives an unrealistic pictur...

Half Speed Sparring

One of the things that has been reccomended on the ARMA article on training tips is half speed sparring. I have delt with this a little in my self defense training. Usually it needs someone to stand by and call a halt when the tempo increases too much. What can people tell me about half speed sparri...
