Just got my new Katana

It's from Albionhttp://albion-swords.com/april-1-2014.htm, and it's the best weapon I've ever handled.

Fighting and arms in Game of Thrones

I know most of you dislike fantasy and all the tropes and misrepresentations associated with it. But, the author of A Song of Ice and Fire has read "Medieval Swordsmanship: Illustrated Methods And Techniques" by mr. John Clements in preparation of writing his novels, in addition to other b...

That seems to be a display from the Royal Armories in Leeds. I went there two years ago, and just this December I saw the Wallace collection. The main difference between tournament armour and battlefield one (if there can be such a term) that I saw was the amount of engravings and other cosmetic add...

Hmm.. Would rapier&dagger be useful versus a cavalry charge? no Would it be useful versus armoured opponents? no Would it be useful when fighting group/formation battles? no Would it be usable when mounted? no Is single combat the common deciding factor in medieval battles? no My two cents.

Thank you, good that this was cleared up. I had been insisting on not describing early swords as Broadsword elsewhere and I'm glad that the ARMA has been right all along :)

Yes I've thought about It, they seem to closer resemble modern "professional wrestling" aka. men in tights shouting at each other, than the warriors of their respective society. I had assumed that, if one catches a Gulish or Thracian warrior and makes him fight in an arena, said warrior wo...

There is a chapter in Marozzo's work that describes fighting with two rapiers. Di Grassi also includes a chapter on such fighting, and both of these masters did recommend studying this method as it required a high degree of skill. However, I have a theory as to why sword & dagger was preferred ...

The dreaded dualwielding

Much controversy and hollywood glorification has surrounded the dual wielding of swords. From what I have read and learned on this site, it seems that apart from dagger & rapier, and some brief mention in a manual where it is said that one must be as good with his off-hand as he is with his main...

Hmm... I always thought the broadsword term was used at the post Renaissance era to describe curved cutting blades used by sailors? Anyway composite or not, the Mongolian bows would not pierce mail, let alone better armour and of that I am very sure. The poundage is right perhaps (since we use Metri...

Stacy thank you for the video. The speaker has a quite amusing way of dispelling myths. Check this one out (it's off topic but will appeal to the general ARMA dislike of the all mighty Katana pop culture image). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XLWzH_1eZsc&feature=channel_page

Can any of the scholars tell us what was used as wrapping material in the good old days? I have always thought it was leather.
