Re: wow

Before you answer, let me just state that any sentence beginning with "I saw it on the History Channel/Discovery Channel/PBS/NBC/Nat Geo Channel/The Playboy Channel or The Violence Channel or anything ending with "Channel" or anything with "website" will not be taken seriou...

Video would be great but a very good 3d model could be shown completing the techniques without the need to dispose of the unfortunate targets.

For my part if I am training beginners I am going to teach them to fall first precisely because they do not know how to counter a takedown or throw. After that we are gonna work on body state and try to build a strong athletic base because without one you won't be countering anything anyway. Regardl...

I imagine your use of the word "spherical" probably added to the confusion.

No handle (grip) comes close to this shape but many pommels do.

I think "cylindrical" better describes what you are looking for.

The (much maligned hereabouts) SCA does not fight with foam. They fight with sticks. Most of the folks I knew when I was with the SCA wore leather armor because it is cheaper and easier to make than metal armor. Mainly because it's cheaper. For the same reasons it was very popular in the periods you...

The biggest problem your facing there Jonathan is that a conscious decision was made at WotC back when they converted to 3rd Ed. to move the game away from it's real world historical roots (which were thin enough already in all but the Greyhawk setting) in order to make it more culturally inclusive ...

There was a thread on this topic not too long ago (was gonna link it but I couldn't find it maybe someone else can).

From what I can recall of that discussion wrestling shoes are a popular choice (and very affordable) though some felt that more traditional footware is important.

Re: wrestling vs judo

I would say that, despite its faults, judo is closer to ringen than modern western wrestling disciplines with the possible exception of sambo (but that is a judo derivative). A lot depends on who you train with, though. And Catch as Catch Can wrestling is closer than either Sambo or Judo but it's a...

MMA guys also train in Wrestling, Judo, Jujutsu, Capoeira, blah, blah, etc, etc... What they do NOT train is many of the brutally effective real combat techniques that exist in these systems (and in Krav Maga, SASG, Wa Lu, name your kung fu, again I say etc...) because they are illegal. If we had a ...

I can't remember his name either but he mentioned that Viggo was a very quick study.

Several of the cast members said it was sort of scary to watch him.

Orlando Bloom was also mentioned as a standout.

Well I would argue that sport wrestling has more real combat application than sport fencing but your analogy isn't far off.

Still a good wrestler would be a useful training partner imo.

There are numerous Ringen moves that would make a fine addition to the arsenal of any MMA fighter. There are of course many more that would get him disqualified or arrested.

In either case I don't see the MMA guy's agent agreeing to the use of the Rondel...

I will add to this that biting a skilled wrestler who has been in real fights is a good way to get your jaw dislocated. I would also encourage the person thinking of using a bite as self defense to consider the type of person most likely to be assaulting you. Do you really want some scumbag's blood ...
