Waster Tapering

I don't think the weight of hard Maple differs enough from Hickory to allow for a different design. i.e. I believe a Hickory with both a profile and distal taper would be too light (as was my maple waster).

Maple for Wasters

Maple isn't as hard, dense or heavy as hickory, but the hard maples are close. Maple is typically easier to find in the US than Hickory, but be sure to get "hard" maple (Black or Sugar Maple, sometimes called White Maple at a lumberyard). Avoid the "soft" Maples (Red and Silver M...

Waster Design

I bought a piece of maple (1x6x6 foot) with a grain as straight as possible from my local lumber yard. Hickory was too hard to find and maple is an excellent alternative. The actual measurements of the board are 3/4 inch by 5 1/2 inches. I drew out a pattern on the wood that allowed me to cut out 3 ...

Re: Practice partners in South East Wisconsin?

Hi Robert, Although I am not practicing (yet) and not an ARMA member, I am about an hours drive south of White Water in Woodstock, IL. There was also an interested member, Dak Wade, in Lake Geneva. It's been a while since I was in touch with Dak, so I don't know if he's active anymore. Definitely co...

Actually, I used maple (which, typically, is lighter than oak, from what I've discovered). I didn't think the type of hardwood would matter; but after some calculations, a blank (2"x3/4"x50") could be 7 ounces lighter. What I should do is find a source of hickory and do a little compa...

I use a skilsaw and a jigsaw to rough the blank shape, a block plane to get the distal taper , a router to round the grip and blade edges and a drill to pin the crossguard on with 5/16" oak dowel rods. Finish it up with some sandpaper and a coat of boiled linseed oil. Hi Shane, You state that ...

Thanks for the quick response, Jeff. I did use laquer thinner to thin out the poly (25% poly as prescribed in this thread). Should it have been thinner (for the tight grain of maple)? Also, would mineral spirits be a better choice for thinning than the laquer thinner (i didn't notice any instruction...

While crafting my first waster, I decided to try the polyurethane since I had the supplies already. My wooden wasters are made of maple (as that was the best material available at the local lumber yard). I'm no expert in wood finishes, but it seems to me that the maple absorbed only the first coat o...

A quick Google resulted in this. I'm no expert, but it looks like (at least) a good start.

Re: Newbie in NYC area

Hi and welcome, I've looked at the wasters available on eBay and have the following comments. These comments are based on what I have seen and read on eBay. I have not purchased any of the available wasters. * They tend to on the light side (when advertised). Typically stated as 1.5 pounds. * No dis...

Is there a specific type of plastic I would use for plastic wasters then? I don't know how rating plastic works, so any information would help. I don't know what plastics others are using, but a simple email to a local plastics company reulted in a recommendation to use Copolyester Polypropylene. I...

As for legwear, I believe most wear black sweatpants (found in any clothing store that carries any sort of sportswear). Are those the pants you are referring to?
