Re: Looking for insight on JC

Pffft! Nonsense. Absolute crap. No one has ever made that accusation to me. Who's saying this? Where? When? Why is this not being asked directly to me? My email is not hidden. Both the ARMA site and my IDS site has direct contact to me all over it. Same for my Facebook and Youtube channel. But, as u...

Gathering 2011

http://thearma.org/ARMAGathering2011.jpg I seldom post on the public Forum here due to my numerous other site commitments and member tasking, but wanted to take the time to add this. The 2011 Gathering was a blast. My thanks and appreciation to everyone who helped make this a huge success. The lear...

Attention All Sword Enthusiasts

Attention All Sword Enthusiasts: See the link below asap. This is a sad way to start the new year. But not surprising. (Anticipating press like this was part of why my "From the Fringe" page was created several years ago, to preempt this very kind of thing by documenting incidents). Slate ...

ARMA Provost Announcement

Attention All: I am honored to make the overdue announcement that, Deputy Director of Aaron Pynenberg, for some time my designated official apprentice, has acquired the ranking of ARMA Provost. Historically, the Provost title within the Schools of Defence was that of an assistant instructor rating. ...

Our New Curricula and a new understanding

Since 2007, I have been teaching as my private core instruction what I consider to be a radical new re-interpretation of the source material of Renaissance martial arts. Based upon the longsword but applying to every skill and weapon, I have been personally teaching it publicly in ARMA seminars sinc...

Re: Paul Champagne

This has hit the ARMA family very hard. I am personally very distraught at this sad and untimely loss. Right now all I can say is that we will be featuring a tribute to Paul's work on our site soon, releasing some podcast interviews with him as way to remember the man and his work, and celebrate his...

Re: Broadsword still used in Australia in 1872!

This just means he used a standard 19th century style cutlass or saber, nothing Renaissance about it really. Multitudes of such single and double edge blades like this, either straight or curved, with all manner of single-hand hilts, were in use among militaries world wide up until the early 20th ce...

I would agree, generally. However, context is important. The Art of Fencing is the art of hitting without being hit. We deal with blades, shearing and cleaving weapons that cut and hack through muscles and bones. They are not sticks that make clubbing and stinging whacks. Their techniques are design...

Re: Medieval Sword "Kata"

No.

Anyone arguing otherwise is deluding themselves.

There are only a few suggestions of two person practice routines, but even these are not structured in any source to represent the Art itself or even the primary means of acquiring skill in techniques.

Thanks for everyone's comments. Sadly, time is running out on the offer and so far very few qualified candidates have even inquired about the offer. So far no representative of any established ryuha has stepped forward --no master, no senior practitioner, no junior student. The TV crew has so far be...

Re: Describe the German longsword style practiced by ARMA

Don't listen to descriptions of it from those who don't train in it. Just look at it in use in our videos and our seminars.

I have never placed great emphasis on feinting in my personal instruction of my own sparing. It is a natural action that occurs, yes, but not as part of some Doctrine.

No joke.
This is entirely serious.
We've already met with the TV crew and they have already interviewed one professor of Japanese history.

Re: Amazon review of Forgeng's Art of Combat

It's an excellent version of Meyer's 1570 work. A Must have.

But, no, none of the teachings Meyer presents in his method is not in the least bit sporting or playful. It's bizarre where this ignorant notion comes from.

I know I have mentioned to several times to our members at events and in email about a research article I have been preparing on this very topic: addressing evidence for a Martial Music theory I have. The article will be ready this year.
