Thank you for the major clarification, Vincent! That's exactly the answer I'm looking for! Given that, although I haven't really practiced Arnis, from that explanation on Spanish swordfighting, I do notice some similarities in concepts and footwork between the two arts, if the Spanish naming conven...

Stacy, excellent analysis, with one additional thought. A straight line is also the easiest to void, and the hardest vector to redirect(that is, to acquire a new target in mid-motion). A thrust is best delivered nontelegraphically in combination with a slash, with one coming a half-beat after the ot...

To Grant's credit, he did mention the fact that what he said was based on his experience, watching bouts. The videos that Dog Brothers have on their event go a long way to supporting what he said with a visual confirmation. Now maybe he's watching inexperienced Kali fighters, and you might even wan...

I have to say that I don't see much use in this at all, as far as Martial Arts go I consider Kali as one of the worst as it has a always go forawrd mentality in its fighting that results in both opponents getting hit multiple times. There is little to no voiding, parrying or blocking, in every sing...

The dog brother embody alot of skill. fights are chaotic, the Dog Brothers come from the same Kali/Escrima Lineage i come from , the Inosanto /JKD lineage. They simply took what they were learning and went out to pressure test it, they found of course that alot of stuff was fluffy and not especiall...

Note also the position of their hips relative to each other when they are executing the throws. For any sort of judoesque throw to work against a stronger opponent, you MUST get your center of gravity below theirs. In almost all the demonstrations, their hips are even level.

It's the "swimming" mostion wrestlers will use when they are trying to secure double underhooks(bearhug, hands gable gripped together, your center of gravity is lower than his).

Here's randy couture explaining.

Re: The Dutch & Indonesian Silat

Petter's 1674 Dutch wrestling manuscript has a technique which isn't seen in other Western wrestling manuals but would normally be recognised today as distinctly Indonesian, from the art of Silat. But as the Dutch colonised Indonesia it would be impossible to prove who taught who http://www.truefor...

Pummeling for underhooks is probably the most reliable counter to both forms of bearhug from the front.

One would hope that proper takedown defense would take priority over learning rolls in the course of ones training. Learning how to fall and roll is a necessary part of any combat art. I guarantee that at least at one point in a person's life he will take a nasty spill, whether through combat or si...

So while I can't see the picture anymore, I would make one note about the differences between Pekiti and the (very little!) German Longsword work i've seen. Namely, that there's no training of a specific guard position(s) at all in the first two sub-systems of Pekiti, although they end up appearing....

Any developments?

Did anything ever come of this? I'm in Austin as well, and would be more than willing to drop by any formative study groups.
