Anyone in the L.A. area?

Hey, I just moved from Alabama to Malibu, California for college. I understand that there's a group up in orange county, but I was wonderding if there was anyone more local who would like to meet up and train.

Send me an email if you can: Robert.bertram@pepperdine.edu.

How difficult is it fence in armor safely? Trying to thrust your sword through the openings of your opponents armor seems kind of hard to control.

Yeah... most of the stuff on youtube sucks. A lot of it are just people playing around in their back yards or at the park with fancy stuff they bought off the internet.. Other videos are of people who have tried to recreate fencing, just like ARMA, but a lot of those aren't very good either. Many of...

The Gladius be something really fun to study and to fence with.

I'm guessing the Roman gladius would have been similar to messer? It seems like it to me anyways.

I'm still pretty new to the whole thing.. But a guy from Church had studied ARMA with some folks and he didn't have anyone in our area and so he invited my siblings and I over and we've been doing it with him for about ayear now. I guess the whole sword thing dazzles everyone when they're kids and e...

My favorite really just depends on what week it is :P

So far, I've gone from really liking longsword to spear to cut and thrust and dagger.

Maybe I'll really like dagger next week.. haha

Re: Throwing the spear

I am very new to the study of western martial arts and I have no manuels available to me on using the spear. Did historical manuels ever teach on throwing your spear at an opponent? Was it uncommon for soldiers to have thrown their spears and used a sword or a dagger instead? I think one of the rea...

Here's a great one from Auerswald. You're probably already familiar with it, but here it is anyways: " 78. Look, thou, and see: how men in the past would wrestle in the hole. One stands in the hole and may not remove his leg from it and his opponent must hop on one leg Much art comes of this an...

While double underhooks or a body lock will serve to set up a takedown very well, such techniques don't tend to control an opponent's arms. This strikes me as dangerous in a culture where every man carries a dagger. If you don't want your enemy drawing his dagger or stealing yours then attacking fr...
