Thanks for the info. It sounds like I've taken a similar path so far - I've been focusing on Liechtenaur/Ringeck techniques with a few others in the area & then making up my own individual drills like you suggested. I was mostly poking around to find out how the "official" ARMA trainin...

Style for beginning longsword

For beginning longsword training, does ARMA focus on the German style, Italian style, some combination of the two, or is it left up to individual preference? And are there any specific drills (individual or partner) that are recommended? I've seen mention of tiprogression & footwork drills, but ...

If you do a search through the forum on this topic, you'll find a lot of old posts about sparring helms. From doing that a few months ago, it sounded to me like 3-weapon fencing masks were the most popular, and hockey & lacrosse helmets next (some people modified them to add wire mesh or perfora...

Thanks for the clarification. Thinking of it as a redirection of the primary cut seems to make more sense. I was treating it as a separate action starting from the bind. Now to go try it out again...

Duplieren

Is the duplieren technique supposed to result in a strong strike, or is it more of a slice to the face? I can't see how to get any power behind it so I don't know if I'm doing it wrong or if that's the way it should work. I'm primarily using Lindholm & Svard's Ringeck book for reference at the m...

Thanks for the responses. I appreciate the philosophy of minimal protection to force you to learn proper technique faster, but I also don't want to deal with the possible 4-6 wk inconvenience of a broken finger. I've broken fingers before & it's not much fun. The tape idea sounded like a good pl...

Leather wrapping waster hilt

Do any of you leather wrap the hilt of your wooden waster? The bare wood seems a little slippery when using gloves. I'm wondering if this is a good idea & if so, what is the best way to do it?

Hi, Tina. I'm one of the 3 that Cooper mentioned. In case you haven't talked to him yet, we're getting together in Golden on Sunday & plan to keep it up on a fairly regular basis. We're mostly working on longsword basics (since I'm a newbie as well) & trying out the techniques from the Ringe...

Cooper, Getting a group together sounds good. I'm at the border of Littleton/Lakewood, so it's not much of a drive to Boulder. Have you met up with others in the area before? It looks like there are a few people on the member list, but I don't know who's active. Steven, La Junta/Paris is a bit farth...

new member in Denver area

Hi, everyone. I'm very interested in joining ARMA & I'd like to find some locals willing to help me get started on the longsword. So far I've read John Clements' Medieval Swordsmanship and a lot of the essays & articles on this site. I'm also trying to practice the basic guards, cuts & f...
