The "hamon" on those ancient blades were due more to the fact the steel was very shallow hardening. It was the aspects of the steel not a clay coat that caused the line. Case hardening does not work for blades. The extra carbon and therefore the hardened portion only goes 1 to 2 mm thick. ...

Hey look another smith! Have you asked any of these questions over at a bladesmithing forum? I've noticed that it is important to ask the swordsman and smiths with experience. Compile all ideas and see what comes out. Happy hammering, and may all your worries be burned in the fire! BTW Would you min...

It's useful to distinguish, the number of folds, a process; from the number of resultant layers, its result. 1 fold gives: 2 layers 2 : 4 3 : 8 4 : 16 5 : 32 6 : 64 7 : 128 8 : 256 9 : 512 10: 1024 This is very true. Just in case everyone thought I was trying to cause trouble by my last statement I...

Tell him to contact Kevin Cashen (an actual bladesmith) if he wants a real education about about making swords. What in specific did he say? I hope it wasn't any of that nonsense of "folded 2000 times...blah blah". That's the one I hear the most and it is just silly. The fact of the matte...

Though it is better ventilated. Actually when you have to wear the chem suit with all that gear on there is NO ventilation...at all. The suit is designed not to let anything in. The protective respirator (gas mask) is of course allowed to let purified air in, but that does not circulate through the...

Well like with all forge weld steel there is always a chance that something could go wrong. If done right it is a solid bar of steel. Just some neat patterns in basically a 10xx bar of steel.

Not of my work, but if you search cable damascus, or cable blades your going to find pics. The pattern tends to be like scales. My favorite (read as ONLY) customer calls it dragon pattern.

Ariel Salaverria has a tutorial with some good pics at the end.

You want the elevator to sway a little (it may seem like a lot while in the elevator, but it really isn't). You know steel cables are doing their job then. You don't want it to be ridged, it may snap. Even if the cable fails you have a neat mechanism that catches you so you don't fall. I used to hel...
