According to "The Online Etymological Dictionary" the term "spade" is "probably from It. spade, pl. of spada 'sword, spade,' from L. spatha 'broad, flat weapon or tool,' from Gk. spathe 'broad blade'." Bottom line: "Spathology" is a perfectly acceptable word, ...
