There is also a technique called 'case hardening', where a medium carbon steel is heated to 'cherry red' colour, and placed in a bath containing carbon rich materials. The carbon migrates into the hot steel, and when quenched gives a very thin layer of higher carbon steel than the inner core. I beli...
