In regards to the original question, a Jesuit Missionary named Cibot did some ink drawings of Chi Gung/ Chinese Internal MA in the 1600s. I think there was also some discussion of some Portuguese sailors fighting a series of duels vs. some Samurai during appx the same era. Have to remember that most...

I like the instinct at work behind this thread. Boxing as we now have it is quite new, even at the turn of the last century there were enough differences in the rules that the tactics of the ring were different. On the MMA forums it is not uncommon to hear Chuck Liddell and others described as being...

Cinqueda Question

Ive been busy and not posting alot lately, but there has been some very good discussion coupled with video demos on the edge vs. flat debate. I think the points being reached represent a very good blend of source scholarship, athletic observation, and weapon experimentation. With this in mind, I am ...

I see this old topic came up to the top again with a new post, but that is a good thing. I find Silver very interesting and useful for many things. I REALLY like that line about "An English Book of Five Rings." Lots of meaning in that statement. What fascinates me is how closely Silver's t...

Ive seen this video around as well. I dont think it was intentional, may have been trying to do whizzer or set up kimura/uri garami type throw. Still, does go to show that although MMA and ring sports have developed a core of very good techniques for clinch work, there are still these other dangerou...

For intense waster fencing, I've been known to wear little more than a T shirt, cotton martial arts pants and a leather glove on my right hand along with a three-weapon fencing mask. For those just starting out, I recommend forearm pads, knee pad for your lead leg, gloves, mask and common sense. 8) ...

I dont remember the source for this, but I believe that at the end of the 1800s or early 1900s, a Glima master fairly definitively threw a visiting Japanese Kodokan instructor. It was many years ago that I came across that, hopefully somebody else remembers better. I would rather do Sumo than Glima ...

Glima on History Channel

I didnt get to watch the entire program, dont even know the name, but as I was going around doing a couple other things last night I caught a couple minutes of some show on the History Channel about the Vikings. The section that I saw featured a demonstration by a Glima instructor and some students....

I think people are on the right track here, but let me add something not yet considered. I havent read Brown's book (yet), but we must remember that kickboxing is taught for the purpose of, well, kickboxing. Train striking within a San Shou, Muay Thai, or MMA context and there will be small changes ...

Wow, you beat me to it. Ditto to everything Elizabeth said. Very good crowd. Lots of knowledgable folks and a wide variety of martial arts experience represented in the group. The guy you mentioned had almost the exact same experience as myself. I lurked around on the old HACA website, similar to hi...

Russian Blades

I am curious about Russian swordsmanship. I am deeply interested in Russian unarmed fighting as many of the principles seem to mesh very well the the Chinese styles Ive put so much time into. However, as I look in the areas of swordsmanship, I dont find many surviving historical artifacts. I forget ...

Very interesting

I find a few things very interesting here. I read a reviewer of Meyer mention that the Fechtschule in Meyer's time was not necessarily teaching civilian self defense, but rather being more like a training hall of a very brutal sport..........modern equivalent being a boxing/Muay Thai/MMA gym. Whethe...

Re: Lack of Striking

If we were being strictly academic, I agree that is a bold statement.

My point is merely that the "headhunting" style of boxing that we see on TV is not representative of the whole history of pugilism worldwide, much less in the west.

Re: Lack of Striking

"But there are strikes specifically described. Petter has some and Ringeck (I am working from memory here) has one where you punch him in the belly and then do a hip throws." This is a good point to dwell on. We have an idea of striking based on our experience of western boxing in its curr...
