Re: Bristol, UK

Hi there,

AFAIK there is very little happening in Bristol but I would recommend checking out the BFHS website. You can get there via a link on our Welcome Page http://www.the-exiles.org - just click the logo.

The BFHS stands for British Federation for Historical Swordplay.

Re: The Flower of Battle

Both of these names are correct. FLos Duellatorum is the name given to the Novati Facsimilie of the Pisani-Dosi because one of the prologues is written in Latin, whilst the Getty and the pierpoint morgan are referred to as Fior Battaglia as they are written entirely in Italian. Incidentally, the use...

Re: Art Talking - die recht kunst

How is the bottom figure a hair pull? The person whose head is down has passed under the more upright figure's left armpit, who in turn looks like he has wrapped the head by passing his arm under the guys right armpit.

Just my thought.

Re: adding weapons?

Sorry Stacy, I disagree. Fiore, although two of his MS are well laid out documents, and can provide an interesting didactic approach, is in fact depicting a system and a systematic approach. What you do with one weapon you do with another weapon, allowing for slight variation depending upon how the ...

Re: The dangers of groundfighting in WMA

Jay, if the winner is always the guy on top in wrestling what is the point of a rear choke? This can be done underneath the guy and if you are choking the carotid will take about 10 secs for the other guy to be unconcious. An example of winning, not being on top and not pounding "snot" out...

Re: The dangers of groundfighting in WMA

Hi Mike, While I agree with you to a point, a knowledge of gound fighting is important I think that you can train to give yourself an advantage in the stand up. I have spent time on doors and so have many of my friends and they all agree that the last place they want to be is on the ground. This doe...

Re: Historicity and Continuity

When the manual stops and we go on in our speculation beyond the documented techniques, is that being true to the art. It is a double quandry. 1. If you extrapolate, you may be wrong 2. If you don't you are limited. Totally agree with everything that you have said here, especially the last part. Wh...

Re: Historicity and Continuity

The problem with taking stuff from other MA is that although something may appear to be similar on the surface, the underlying principles and tactical considerations may be different in some or all of their aspects. In my opinion we must first understand the historic western system before starting t...

Re: Thoughts on Tail Guard

Hi there, Perhaps Fiore can help: This is the Position of the Long Tail that is extended backwards to the ground, It can place thrusts and in front it can cover and strike. And if it passes forward and [strikes] through with Fendente, to the Close Plays it enters without failure, that such a guard i...

Re: How To Begin Training?

Leam, Go back to your books, Pflug and Corona are two different guards. In fact, Corona, is refered to by Fiore as Posta Frontale, which is also known as Corona - which translates to Crown, or Kron, and guess what it has the same functionality as Kron from the German systems <img src="/forum/im...

Re: Fiore cuts

Eddie, Fiore is written in Italian not Latin. The prologue of the Novati (pisani-dosi) is latin only. The cuts are: Fendente - traveling from the teeth to the knees, downward cleaving blows. Sottani - Upward cuts traveling the path of the Fendenti, preferably false edge, not true. Mezani - horizonta...

Re: Lack of Master Strikes

With this technique the Student passes to his right raising into Frontale (Crown, Kron) and strikes down at the opponents blade to force it to ground. When trapped the control is changed to the foot and a false edge blow is delivered to the face, immediately followed by a true edge strike to the wri...
