[Hi Mike, The compound Bradswurd does exist in the source I quoted in my inituial post. Broad sword (in all its variant spellings)also exists in many period sources.] Hello Terry, Looking through my copy of Bright's Old English Grammar and Reader I looked through the Battle of Maldon and fou...

{ So if you want to call a 9th century weapon, a Brádswurd that's fine, but please don't call it a Broadsword.
I believe this is the proper interpretation of the appearance of brād swurd, at least in Old English. Adjectives do fuse at times to form a compound word later in a language an...

Sword and Buckler Sword and Shield (Sword and Axe) I like the buckler and the Shield. Once some of it clicks, there is a satisfaction in it that I can't describe. Sometimes, it is like you know something the opponent doesn't know. I think the very satisfactory feeling of countering a strike with you...

Full power with wasters effect of pain

Recently, I was attempting to perform a krump and was not moving correctly. My partner struck with a zornhau which caught me right on the elbow. this taught me immediatly that I was offline and not doing the move correctly. I quickly made adjustments to my movement and now better understand the krum...

Strength of Blows

To Lance's Original idea that to cut, full force is not always necessary, I think all have made good comments and I think we are all on the same side of the street. The issue with paddeds, is that at times some people do hit with a massive amount of force that is perhaps unnecessary. Done the same w...

Important question. As others I believe many of these apply but specifically for me, physical excersise has always been easier for me when I have a purpose other than physical exercise. Lifting weights for lifting weights bores me to death, lifting weights to improve specific muscles so I can do cer...

After reading the three days worth of posts, I am struck by the critics by historians, or historians in training, who point out that various areas of John's article are historically inacurate. Ms. Boyden's piece in particular, goes on in depth. The problem, is that she often takes her discussion out...

Yes, It is amazing how much people talk without actually being able to DO. Nice bit of documentation. And by the length of the clip, I don't suppose they can claim it was a fluke!javascript:void(0)

Re: Lindholm/Ringeck's Zornhaw

Most zornhau that I have attempted without moving either forward traverse or back step timed to my opponent, have resulted in me being hit, usually a very palpaple hit. I think the practice of stopping when one gets a strike to the arm or hand encourages such stationary practices. Saprring until the...

Re: Simplified long sword fighting... and why.

Jake I think you have it right when you say: " You must learn detail before you can forget detail and give into to simplicity and intuition. Yes, fighting is simple. But reaching simplicity is not. " I think different interpretations will at times conflate that issue of simplicity; one per...

Re: MRL daggers

We use sharps for test cutting. Are you using these daggers for test cuts? How?

Does anyone use sharps for anything else but test cutting? If so, what are the reasons for doing so?

I assumed you were looking to use them as blunts.

Re: Simplified long sword fighting... and why.

Yes, of course, sparring is essential. Studying the techniques, I should say reading the techniques without trying to do them in time with an opponent with intent will teach you nothing. I read somewhere that a test was designed where one group of people practiced throwing freethrows and another gro...

Re: Simplified long sword fighting... and why.

Every strike, if performed with intent, has the ability to both attack and defend. Fading back and then counter striking I suppose could be called defensive, but the purpose is to counter-strike. If you stopped at fading back, removing yourself from the battle-field, then I would call that purely de...

Re: Simplified long sword fighting... and why.

I agree wholeheartedly David! I especially like your comment here: "Later, Meyer uses many more guards... but he uses them as frames in a film to describe actions. If you follow him, you could take the "guards" he moves through and make a flip book out of them and watch his actions he...
