Re: Staying, Binding and Winding and the Dre Wunde

Jeff, At ARMA NNJ we have found that binding/winding with wasters isn't too useful. Wasters are good for some things, but not that. They are too thick, too stiff, and bounce off each other in a way totally unlike steel. If you haven't already, try it with steel blunts and you'll see a huge differenc...

Re: Modern Fechtmeister

Mike, Many Asian masters will agree with it, and even question the necessity of martial soundness in their arts. While there exists the possibility that somewhere a group of people is practicing a version of kenjutsu that actually uses combat-effective techniques, I'm not going to hold my breath unt...

Re: Modern Fechtmeister

The fact is, Asian martial arts long ago lost their martial soundness, and no other European martial arts group compares with the ARMA, in efficiency or knowledge-base. Mike, Really, all Asian martial arts have no "martial soundness"? That's quite an assertion. As for other European marti...

Re: Modern Fechtmeister

Keep in mind Dave that if this false claim, joking or not is heard by the wrong people it can lead to more unessasary contraversey. You know how sensative some people can get. Gary, True, and one thing Justin might want to do is to ask his group members to read this thread. That way they'll see jus...

Re: Modern Fechtmeister

I was simply saying that a study group leader, or any member of that study group for that matter, should make it clear to all other members that jokes that are hurmful to the orgainization and/or to its members are inappropriate. Friendship is not a consideration in this matter. Randall, I have no ...

Re: Modern Fechtmeister

Gene, That last statement makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Let me get this straight: this particular ARMA study group puts on a demonstration. The leader of the study group is referred to as "fechtmeister" by the other study group members. Audience members, hearing this, go up to the ...

Re: Modern Fechtmeister

Randall, In the ARMA DFW study group we make it clear to everyone that practice is a martial arts class, not a social gathering. A little laughter and joking does make practice more enjoyable, but there are limits. We don't allow joking that could hurt any individual member. Nor should we allow joki...

Re: Modern Fechtmeister

Jeff, IMO it is not a "problem" with him or the group as such it is problematic with the image it may present to new comer's and the publlic at large. I agree. My entire point was that I don't see it as a problem within the group that warrants any drastic measures. But yes, if a new person...

Re: Modern Fechtmeister

Gene, I understand your points, however, I stand by my opinion that making something like this an issue is elevating a relatively trivial thing into a serious problem. First, ARMA, like every other organization on this planet, has its own rules and guidelines. One of our most important guidelines is...

Re: Modern Fechtmeister

Jay, Justin, I am sorry but this is simply not persuasive. I repeat what I said in my post above. This is an example of trying to create a problem where none exists. Did you read this section that Justin wrote earlier? I know that I am not nearly deservant of the title, and I have told them many tim...

Re: Modern Fechtmeister

If members of your study group (notice I did not say "your students") will still not stop the practice after you insist upon it, then it is time for them to leave. They have no business being in a study group if they are going to embrace that nonsense. SNIP I am reasonably certain that an...

Re: Schielhau of Doebringer

I think you need to ask the question re the schiller: what does it do? what is it's nature? Answer: it strikes, it cuts, it impacts, it injures. But what is it supposed to strike when used as a versetzen vs. pflug? Does it strike your opponent's blade to take his point offline and set up a thrust? ...

Re: Schielhau of Doebringer

In fairness to Christian Tobler, he was responding to the specific points I raised, not giving his entire interpretation of the schielhau. I did give him a link to this thread, so hopefully he might come here and adress that point.

Re: Schielhau of Doebringer

Jeffrey, I e-mailed Christian Tobler about his schielhau interpretation and posed the questions that I raised above. I forgot to ask for permission to post his response so I'll just summarize his main points: 1. All evidence from the manuscripts that illustrate schielhau show it ending in ochs. 2. S...
