My (limited) experience is that if someone goes for the lower leg as I am closing, I usually hit them in the head a moment later. Sword & Buckler vs Long Sword

Apologies if I am missing something obvious, but I haven't found anything yet in a fight manual covering this. What is the best way to close when fighting with sword and buckler against a longer weapon? I find that it is difficult to avoid being hit in the legs when doing so. The things I have tried...
