Your assuming that the antagonists in the scenario are aware of the moral standing and culture details of the other. A lot of society was (and some still is) very xenophobic. If the opponents had enough information about each others culture/styles then the samurai would know of the ethics in combat ...

Using kicks in armoured combat is generally more about stopping the other person short or shifting them back simply because you can't punch through most armour enough to damage the person inside. I have seen and used round shields effectively to pin an opponent and prevent them from moving their sword or arms because they are pressed against their chest and are being bowled backwards, however doing the same with a buckler would be more difficult. Just curious, if you are planning on using a sword and buckler, would it not be a good idea to have a small dagger or knife as well? If the buckler is strapped to your arm it provides some protection, having a blade would provide an edge to strike with and to assist in parrying attacks with a little...
