Is this historically accurate?

I recently read the linked article, and I am interested in knowing if his claim is accurate? I have heard much information to the contrary, but European martial arts are heavily distorted, and I'd like to know fact one way or the other.

When men put their lives on the line there is a lot expected of them, not only by their society but also by themselves. I think every Roman on the line would have expected a lot of real fencing by his buddies. I would actually suggest that it is much more likely that the Romans practiced a formatio...
