Re: Southpaw fencer

"That said, I do recall something I was told years ago about "Why Kendo is easier for Lefties" - the right hand, on top, is for power, while the left hand, on the bottom, is for control - and therefore, lefties are better off." Actually, this is not accurate. The lower hand, at t...

Re: Videos?

For speed, ease of use, and price, Windows Movie Maker is hard to beat. It can also be easily expanded with add-ons from Pixelan.

Re: Traits of a fighter

I'd say that we are going to be able to find cause for all nine to be important one way or another. If I could get away with picking just one, I'd lean toward intuition. When lacking physical superiority over the enemy, I think the only way to begin is with an understanding of our own strengths and ...

Re: Weekly video update

This week's [March 21, 2005] sparring clips are long, but there are some gems. In particular, Lance proves himself to be truly heroic with some great anti-polearm work. The exchange I mention is in the clip entitled part 1 and begins at the 10 minute 33 second mark and continues to the 15 minute mark.

Re: sparring

It seems to me that when I find a technique that I cannot use well in sparring, it takes me about a year of experimentation and thought to figure out if I can learn to make it work. After a year or so has passed and it's still not working I feel less pressure to make it work. If it's something I rea...

Re: Weekly video update

Lance, I watched the clip of you facing the spear. Good long clip with lots of rounds - I like that. It actually looked a little chilly there! What was it about this weapon that threw you off? You seem to get back into form for the last few rounds in the match, but at the beginning it's just not lik...

Yes, let we old ones conspire against the young ones. You know what they say about age and treachery...!

Re: Sharing : Sparring video

That's the problem when you are the champ... everybody is working hard to take you down. <img src="/forum/images/icons/ooo.gif" alt="" /> Adapting, changing and working to develop in areas that challenge you - learning to fight a more aggressive bout as you mentioned - seems like...

Re: Sharing : Sparring video

Alfred,

When I met you this past summer, I was impressed with your hand speed. I'm pleased to see in these clips that it has improved as has your accuracy.
Perhaps the next thing to work on is flying tackles...?

Video Commentaries

Perhaps we should work out a method for commenting on video clips, such as by the elapsed time, so that it's easier to discuss sequences in the clips?

I wonder how the historical record refelcts this? I will have to expand my reading to see if there are lots of fingerless corpses turning up in excavations of battlegrounds...

Frequency of hand hits

I'm curious to hear how often your opponents land a good strike [intentional or not] on your hands while sparring. We've just begun to engage in sparring with Lance's RSW equipment and therefore - without our regular sparring gear. I find I am running out of knuckles! Yesterday morning during a very...

Re: Wanted : Sparring Video

Thanks for sharing the clips Jeanry. That park you spar in looks great to me. Seoul lacks a little in that regard... unless you want to practice under the baffled eyes of a few thousand spectators. I watched each clip three times. I don't know about you, but I find it hard to watch both fighters at ...

Re: video clip

Just an update on Jeanry's question about the blade alignment in the first strike on the clip. From the angle shot behind my attacker (the one in the clip) it looks to me like the blade lands a little flat, but due to distance and the vibration and blurring from impact I couldn't decide. On the clip...

Re: video clip

Yes, Lance has it right. When I shifted to cancel out his attack posture, you should be able to hear him utter, "Oh, s**t!" and shift himself. It was the involuntary profanity that got everyone chuckling. I included the scene for that alone. The rest of the bout was actually pretty interes...
