Re: Traditional English MA -v- Escrima

Jenny, No, he's 'typical' of Morris Dancing which is probably decended from English stickfighting traditions et al. It's not a true story at all, just a jokes on several levels -amongst the underlying jokes is the constant "What if a 1600s WMA guy took on a 1700s EMA guy?" type debates. An...

Re: Advice to potential authors

In practical terms, how do I copyright my draft manuscript -Is merely putting a 'copyright sign' and my name/date on one page sufficient?

I've already worked out that by putting it in hard copy it is safer.

Re: Exchange between east and west?

I buy it to a point.
It is silly to say that before Alexander campaigned in Asia, Asia didn’t have martial arts.

But it is very reasonable to say that Pankration influenced the martial arts of the cultures Alexander conquered.

Re: Exchange between east and west?

(Gene) First of all, your friend is incorrect. The earliest known fechtbuch, I.33 was written hundreds of years before Talhoffer and thus before these expeditions Only about 10 years before Marco Polo's return from the orient -I wouldn't suggest that he brought back Eastern MA though but it should ...

Re: Please try to identify this sword

I have only a basic knowledge of WW1 but I have seen footage of the very long bayonets -classically the British 'sword bayonet'. Here's a picture of a British soldier with a rifle & bayonet to give a general impression of the typical size: http://homepage.tinet.ie/~tipperaryfame/bayonet.gif

Re: hi & book project

comparred to MMA, I hear you. But some of it is good stuff - often better than many contemporay 'habits'. A good example is in the Petter Wrestling manual you linked, the knife defenses starts off pre-emptively -leap years ahead of many contemporary knife defence syllabus' (albeit common thinking in...

Re: hi & book project

good pankration project. Are you thinking of competing in mma with it? If so, good luck. But either way, good stuff. Re the wrestling manual -interesting. Will take time to read through more thoroughly but seems very few throws. Some of the moves area bit faniciful -like kicking a knife out of someo...

Re: Egyptian Wrestling Images

Great stuff <img src="/forum/images/icons/smile.gif" alt="" /> something that caught my eye is third row down just right of middle - one guy has tried to do some sort of tackle ('shoot' in modern terminology) and the other guy has sprawlled -except also turning his back... at lea...

Re: hi & book project

Cheers, I checked out the manuals previously to finding the forum; fascinating and very well presented. ARMA is great. I’m no historian so any book I did where I talked about the history side or tried to translate anything would lack credibility –or be plagiarism. So I need a co-author if the projec...

hi & book project

Hi, Thought I’d introduce myself. I come at RMA from the contemporary martial arts perspective –having studied numerous styles for 10 years -not the longest time but long enough to give a broad appreciation. I’m currently training in Mixed Martial Arts which is a modern format combining full-contact...
