Magister Andreas' longsword-messer Guide

In Magister Andreas' guide, he shows the parallels of messer fencing to longsword fencing. They are basically the same. Longsword has five strikes, messer has six. My question is some discrepencies in his guide. At the beginning it says... The Ox is the same as the Steer guard. So they're broken wit...

Re: Tallhoffer's Krumphau

Wow. Lots of good ideas. Thanks.

Yeah, I should probably stop worrying about the techniques and specifics and do what I've done in all my other martial arts, quit talking and fight. Sometimes the academic side takes over.

Re: Chances of survival of a duel or battle

Phillip I suppose the more clear a winner is, the more the art is taking hold. That's the whole point! I thought these "rapierists" would be more skilled, but apparently it's the nature of the rapier and being stabbed. My friends who tell me about samurai duels are mostly japanese swordsma...

Re: Tallhoffer's Krumphau

So Phillip, you're saying that a Krump may be a mid-action change in plan? That would make sense since I'm told the Ox is mainly used for defending the high parts. As he defends you change direction. That would make things crumpled or crooked. I've gotten the Krump to work in sparring a bit, but I a...

Chances of survival of a duel or battle

Does anyone know where I can find any stories or accounts of duels? Any culture or time period would be fine. I am interresting in the nature of a sword duel. I've read a couple of renn and japanese duels, most of which both die. Some people tell me that it was very likely or probable that both duel...

Tallhoffer's Krumphau

I have a question about this specific picture. Is the figure on the right countering the Krumphau as Ringeck explains by holding strong and stabing? Tafel 19 http://www.schielhau.org/images/tafel_19.gif Die Krumme schnell hinauf. - kehre die spitze dagegen. The quick curved strike. - Turning the poi...

Re: Teacher Strikes

Heck, let's try it. Here's what may be inferred... ZORNHAU He who strikes you from above, Wrathful Strike point concludes, Would he first ward, Take off high without driving. To the strong again, Wind stab stab first, take it farther. Mark this well, strike stab stance, light or hard. Immediately an...

Re: Teacher Strikes

Meyer says, "as the Master Strikes will be named, not that one can thus fully use the weapon Rightly, and Master this art so soon, but that from them one can Master all proper artful elements which will be acted on from knowing them here," Essentialy, you can't be a master swordsman from j...

Re: Through kendo eyes

I agree. Two different animals. I've been doing a little kendo lately. I've been trying many types of sport fencing to get a better understanding of the sword. I figured kendo would help me with my longsword. I try to remember that it's a sport, not a martial art. The more I practice kendo, the more...

Re: cut and thrust sword

I have a question. Could Meyer be considered to have a cut and thrust section? I see his rapier section appears to focus on the thrust, but could a Dussack be considered a cut-and-thrust sword? I mean this in regards to technique and not sword catagory. There's an obvious difference in appearance, b...

Re: Renn & Medieval Sword and Buckler compare/contrast

Which historical manuals should I read if I am interrested in learning more about the cut and thrust sword? I intend to buy Mr. Clement's other book on Rennaissance Swordsmanship. I've read Silver and such, but he seems more intent on proving his opinion that the cut and thrust is better than the ra...

Renn & Medieval Sword and Buckler compare/contrast

I was recently looking through the I.33 manuscript in the Research and Reading section of this site and my question has to do with this bit of text which is not in the manuscript, but I assume an editorial. "The manual is good source (and among the very few) for how dynamic the Medieval sword &...

I agree. I guess I meant that humans shouldn't necessarily be treated as animals. But that's a whole other philisophical debate.

Re: Combat Ethics

I would venture that morals and ethics only apply before and after the fight and even then it's up to the individual. This may sound horrible, but when reading it I immediately thought of a quick death. It's what I'd want and it's how I was one of the only rules my dad taught me while hunting that h...
