Doth This Forum Liveth?

Looks like the last post on here was 2021... It's sort of sad to see how the internet has changed over the years. Places like this used to be buzzing hubs of information. Very few forums around anymore. I kind of miss the good old days. "Fencing (Right honorable) in this new fangled age, is lik...

Re: Larger Danish axe...

Why do you want an axe that big? A 10 inch edge on a Danish axe sounds perfectly reasonable to me.

This one reviewed on my armoury is 9.93 inches.

That's a pretty interesting thread. I didn't know viking age swords were intended to be gripped with the pommel in the hand. Neat.

The leather rubbing off issue sounds like a problem of poor grip construction. This is relatively common with Hanwe's unfortunately. If the pommel is biting into your wrist you are likely gripping the weapon improperly. Try gripping the sword with the web of your hand tucked up against the cross gua...

I will have to look into it, thankfully I don't think we take the big head shots as in boxing.

What are your thoughts on appropriate hand protection? There is varying debate as to the amount and type of hand protection for our craft.

By the way I am in no way saying that we should not be wearing masks. I am however questioning how much padding we should have on underneath or in addition to the mask as it may contribute to a similar effect.

My understanding of the safety gear in boxing issue is that it actually has to do with felt impact rather than perceived risk. Getting punched in the head is painful. Thus, when wearing no head protection a fighter is not willing to take as many big shots to the head due to the fact it hurts and rat...

Hello Mr. Brazas, I don't know the average weights for all of these, but I will ball-park some of them for you. I believe a maille shirt typically weighs somewhere in the range of 20-25 lbs. May be heavier depending. Not sure what exactly you mean by "full coat of maille" do you mean a shi...

Also, there is some evidence that wearing too much protective gear in various sports actually leads to more injuries rather than less. This is often due to the fact that participants are able to hit harder and heavier than they normally would be able to. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-229...

Hello Keith,

Thanks for this well written article on an important topic. By the way, do you happen to know where you can find the protective rating of a mask? You mention that masks should at least be CEN level II? I am not sure where one finds that on the mask.

Thanks.

Hello Ethan, I'm glad to hear of your interest in learning these arts. For starting out, my first ever manual which I feel provides a very good start point for German longsword is Sigmund Ringeck's Knightly Art of the Longsword , translated by Lindholm. Another very good start--point which I have no...

Basket-hilted weapons are generally outside the time frame ARMA focuses on. However, this book looks like it should give you a pretty good overview of the use of various basket-hilted swords such as Scottish claymores and related weapons: http://www.amazon.com/Highland-Broadsword-Scottish-Regimental...
