Hello Everyone

Postby James Hudec » Sun Jan 16, 2005 3:33 pm

Hi. I've been studying the mainsite intently for a while; I came across it about a month ago while researching knights vs samurai, and found John Clements' essay on the subject.

I'm from Canada, and I have a keen interest in the culture of the middle ages and renaissance, particularly warfare, and this looks like a great place to learn.

Welcome James!

You'll find that although many of the folks here know a great deal about culture and history, we are primarily focused on actually developing the martial arts of the period into a modern discipline of study. It is a an academic effort, especially for those who are translating and interpreting manuals. It is also a very intense physical activity for only through serious training with true martial intent can we understand what we see in the source material we study. Again, welcome aboard!

Thanks for the welcome Mathew.

I am extremely interested in the WMA and use of medieval and renaissance weapons. Unfortunately, I don't think there's much opportunity for me to pursue this interest unless you have any chapters in central Alberta.

Welcome James!

Being alone is nothing new. I spent several years isolated and without training partners or instruction. I learned whatever I could solo until I was able to travel to my first workshop. By hanging some simple flyers around and getting my name up on the sparring partners list I eventually attracted some local interest. The group is small but dedicated. We hope to obtain a training facility sometime soon but unfortunately wer're running into liability and rental issues. If only I were rich <img src="/forum/images/icons/smirk.gif" alt="" />

It may take some time but with persistance you can make it happen.

Good luck,
Gary

Hello and Welcome, Last year I was alos in your position, I have a study group going now, and we have been very lucky to have established a working relationship with a local dojo. We have training facilities and all.

It is not easy starting out, and actually I am in the process of writing an informative article with Jeff Gentry, also a new group leader in Columbus about the do and don'ts of getting started as well as thoughts on waivers insurance stuff etc....

Being alone gives you some ADVANTAGES starting out. Begin with the basics, guards, cuts etc. Build a base in physical fitness and strength then use your skills to attract members. Do not work to hard at it-word of mouth and dispalys of competent basic skills will carry you far.

Please watch for this article which should be submitted to ARMA, within a month or two-Max. I spent much effort and MONEY, when I really did not need to-hopefully my mistakes can be avoided and give you'all confidence when you begin to organize your groups- Later Aaron Pynenberg ARMA-Appleton
