Messers?

Postby GaryGrzybek » Thu Mar 17, 2005 6:58 pm

Anyone know where I can get a decent wooden messer these days? I bought my first and only from Hans of Ochs but would like to get another. <img src="/forum/images/icons/confused.gif" alt="" />

I got some from Hollow Earth that are pretty darn good. They don't have them listed on their website, though, so you might have to email or call them to order some. The ones I bought might have been prototypes or something, I don't know. I bought them at the Southern Knights event in New Orleans.

I Made a few this summer, with good responce. Alas I sold all of them at the Skokloster fair. It was farly easy to make them .

You could give it a try.

Hi Gary,

are you looking for a langen messer waster? a short messer? I think the type you are looking for would help. That said, I do make a langen messer waster. You could ask Jake Norwood, or Stewart Feil how they like the ones I made them, for an outside view on them.

hope this helps.

Hi Brian,

Sorry for not being more specific. I'm looking for Grosse Messer wasters to be exact (single handers). The one I purchased from Hans of Ochs even had the lug for trapping techniques although that would be a lot to ask. I know Wooden Weapons carried some but I no longer trust the service based on what I've been hearing.

Hi Gary,

No problem, the waster I make is 40 inches in overall length, the blade is about 30 inches, with about a 9 inch handle, the cross is about 1 and 1/4 "thick" between the handle and the blade, and is about 8 inches long. I do include a the lug for trapping. However, it is straight rather than having the slight curve that your gross messer has. Also, it is out of hickory.

hope this helps.

I make a padded-waster messer which has the clamshell knuckle guard. The one I'm using right now is 42" in length and weighs about 2 lbs, it's suitible for single or two handed use though it has a large grip.

It is as flat as a wooden waster and almost as firm. They are also easier and cheaper to make than longswords.

I believe Jake still has the one I gave him a year ago and still uses it.

Yeah, I enjoy that "padded" messer very much.

Brian's messer wasters are similar to the ones that Ochs had in 2003, but with a much firmer, more permanent nagel.
