30-4-05 Free style open sparring event

Postby Alfred Wong » Mon May 02, 2005 11:09 pm

On 30th April 2005 Shaolin Black Tiger school had joined force with the RSW group to organize an open, free for all weaponry sparring event. During the event, participants from many different styles had tested their skill on the field vs similar and dissimilar styles. Unlike our regular videos where some of the guys were totally newbies, almost all of the participants in this event were formally trained in some arts. There were koryu Shinto Ryu (not shown), Toyama Ryu (not shown) some iaido schools (sauchan), Chinese style (simon, yin, cobra, gunbuster....), Filipinno style (Siu fu) and more.

The videos that are permitted by the participants to display in public can be found below:

While sparring with different style, I spent time to talk to some participator who is interested in joining the local ARMA group. Lance also demonstrated his technique in European Swordsmanship in his sparring rounds. <img src="/forum/images/icons/cool.gif" alt="" />

Mind to give me more information about it? That file is straight from my computer and I have both AVG and Firewall on. AVG database updated to the latest and at least since March there were 0 virus reported from the daily scan. Plus, all my webpage is plain vanilla HTML with not programming scripts. It's unlikely to embed any virus there.

So would you mind to tell me what virus are you referring to?

Lance

I have not encountered any virus from any of the files I have downloaded from your site. Most likely the name of one of your file matchs the name of a file the that the server had a problem with in the past. You might should do a full scan just to be sure.

Thanks for the videos. <img src="/forum/images/icons/laugh.gif" alt="" />

I viewed some of the films and didn't encounter any viruses that my firewall or antivirus software could detect.

I thought the bouts were interesting. I watched Lance fighting a guy with two (dao?) sabers. Lance looked like his form was very good. It looked like more traditional WMA form. Was their some emulation here of the recent visitor from Japan?

This was an interesting fight, I have never faced someone with two sabers, and they had nearly the same reach as the sword Lance was using. Lance did a great job of keeping his weapon in front of him, snaping back into guard very quickly after each strike without the long, slower sweeping recoveries I have seen in other clips. I could not tell who won the most bouts but Lances technique seemed aggressive, fast and tight and it looked like he was protecting his hands better in his guards. He kept his point in his opponents face thus throwing him off balance for the most part, and countered every attack with swift, decisive cuts and thrusts. And I think I saw a really nice right-hangen counter at the very end of the match:) Looks like Lance is getting better with that counter. The sword Lance was using also looked like a very nice weapon.

Alfred on the other hand looked like he was having a bit of a bad day. He displayed his usual impressive accuracy and good timing, but was somewhat static in his stance, slow in striking and recovery, and not really focused, though again i could not tell who won as it seemed like most of the hits on both sides were to the hands.

Parke did some nice feints and voids and cuts cleanly and decicvely, but in his eagerness to attack, ignored some attacks he could have easily displaced, or voided by stepping aside while striking (or displaced using miesterhau) thus resulting in several unneccesary 'mutual deaths'.

Hope that helps,

Jeanry

Hey Jeanry,

Thanks for your comment! My computer is down and I am replying in my very old 266mmx notebook...

As long as my opponent is dead, it's okay - I think I don't need to do the good ol' Penguin-happy-voidy-dance when facing a false time orientated opponent.

Yours,

Someones got to ask eventually, may as well be me...

Did any of the people sparring train under the "no free-sparring traditions" attributed to Koryu, if so did this effect their performance, and if so, is this why said videos are not being displayed?

I don't think they didn't want their videos to be disclosed with that reason. On the other hand, many of the participants were having their first free sparring with weapons in their life, despite their training of weapons could have been years already. It did enlighten them about what they should train more at. <img src="/forum/images/icons/smile.gif" alt="" />

I think Simon won most bouts because I got hit on my hands many times and almost on every counter where I hit his head, he got me first on my right elbow.

:|

I've to figure out how to deal with those 2 swords attacks.

Well, in all reality, you may have lived because you got him in the head, while he just got your elbow. But you should always try to avoid double hits.

Right, so that's why whenever there's double hit/mutual death, I took that as my defeat. I can't afford getting hit anywhere in reality. <img src="/forum/images/icons/smile.gif" alt="" />
