Yes its in the word doc I linked to a while back, but the photos are a little fuzzy. I'll do a clearer guide to this when I make some swords this week and post it here.

Yes Jeanry's paddeds are vastly superior to anything we use, not only do they handle better but they also last, mine have to be rebuilt every few months.

i will be ordering a pair of jeanry soon along with another Dusack to match the one he gave me when i was in New Orleans which is excellent. We are just starting out with Meyer's Dusack so we will be using them quite soon for sparring. Meyer's Dusack is quite fantastic too, its a very exciting weapon.

I brought my own padded longswords which are 90% Jeanry's design. I've only broken 1 since I started using them. I checked out Jay's to see how mine were by comparison. Jeanry's are a little sleeker but I'm getting better with each attempt. One day soon I also hope to be a master padsmith.

I thought the fighting looked great, the longsword form was very tight, the ringen effective, and I was particularly impressed with the staff work, something we haven't trained in really yet. I can clearly look forward to learning a lot there!

For those interested in swords, please be aware I'm going to be out of town (in Europe) from May 30 until June 22, so if I dont get back to you please realise that is why. Also if you wish to contact me for anything please do so by email rather than PM.

David,

What design are you using for those padded staffs? I see you're able to pull off some one-handed slings with them fairly comfortably. Are they the same design we have in the training section or something you came up with? I need to make a couple myself for the big August shinbash/ I mean shindig.

Stacy,

The staffs are my design. They've proven to be surprisingly durable, at least in the context of Mair's thrust-centric fighting style, and only cost about $10 each to build.

  • Buy 6' of regular 1 1/4" closet rod (I use pine, though they also sell synthetics) and cover it with 3/8" or 1/2" foam pipe insulation (a 6' x 1" tube will stretch to fit the closet rod).

  • Next, wrap contractor-grade duct tape around the foam in a tight spiral, from one end to the other.

  • Last, cut eight 2" diameter circles out of 1/2" foam (pipe insulation will work, but flat foam panels are easier to work with) and tape four of them on each end of the staff (so that there is 2" of padding at both tips).

Done.

The only problem we've found with these staffs – aside from being bouncy (as are most paddeds, unfortunately) – is that they are just over 2" in diameter and therefore a little harder to hold on to with one hand than a regular staff, as evidenced in the very first clip in the video <img src="/forum/images/icons/grin.gif" alt="" />

Thanks David. I hope you can make it to Houston in August so we can do some sparring.
