What did the medieval martial artists use to protect their hands when using the Murder Stroke? Just gloves?

Just in playing, we have discovered that you dont really need anything to protect you hands. But I think gloves are a good idea.
Thanks, Bill

I personally recommend using some kind of gloves. Anything made out of thick leather works, or you could use the gauntlets w/ maile coverings on the palms.
But, you really don't need gloves(technically). I have used the murder stroke without gloves(not on a person of course) and not had to worry about cutting my hands. It seems to come from the way one grips the blade. As long as it is firmly gripped and not allowed to draw through the hand, it won't cut. Just be careful if you do try it with a bare hand on a live blade! And don't try halfswording and reversed swording with curved single edged blades(falchion, scimitar, katana, dao, etc.) or else you'll find out the hard way.

Leather gloves are fine as long as your hands aren't allowed to slide along the blade. Armoured gauntlets typically have leather palms as a rule.
