Knight's Camp 2005

Postby John_Clements » Sun Jul 24, 2005 2:47 pm

Hi all

Last week I had the privilege of spending 3 days in Sierra Nevada National Park up in the wooded mountains outside Fresno, CA teaching a great group of youths and adults an introductory Renaissance Martial Arts course on longsword. It was a great opportunity, albeit an exhausting on (having ten or twelve kids chase you around with sticks for hours upon end over rocks and ground debris at that altitude is a challenge). They were all keen students with a great attitude. They purchased 50 wasters for the event intended to teach youth about character, ethics, and chivalric values. We plan to make the ARMA component an annual thing. Besides teaching, practicing, and doing general work on my projects, I even had time for a little rappelling and rock climbing along with the whole communing with nature” thing.

[One of the more amusing things we did along the way was hold an imprompt “Lord of the Rings” battle (the terrain matched perfectly) wherein a few chosen fighters equipped as the “Fellowship” (including a superb archer and a few of the smaller kids playing other appropriately obvious roles) was besieged and assaulted by the entire remaining group of “orcs.” Good silly fun.]

Next year I hope other members can join us for further training. Besides great camping there is an excellent resort up there.

JC

Hey John

Man almost everything I enjoy, climbing, camping, sword play, the only thing missing is the kayaking, sound's like a great time wish it would have been me.

Glad you had a good time, glad to see some youngster's learning the real way of swordsmanship.

M. Clement's,
Great work!. Especially since you combined the physical discipline of fencing with an aspect of the morality attendent to the old fencing masters.
And with the kids involved, mayhaps it contradicted the mass cultures perception of swords and the arts involved...being little more than a 'cool violence'. Without consequence, or needing cause or discipline to learn.
The long ago antecedents to contemporary fencing (ARMA's distant ancestors) may have used their skills for warfare or maintaining a (at times) questionable social order; and they may have not always lived up to their own codes...but they did have codes of conduct. Which were just as important to them, as any like conduct in the East.
And it's really impressive you seem to have exposed some new learners to the discipline, in all it's facets.

Indirectly related to M. Clement's teaching the kids in California. It seems that WMA are catching on as a physical ed/ethics training curriculum for older kids.
On that, have any of you on the east coast (or at least away from my particular hinterlands)...heard of a group/school called "On Guard". Looked at their website, but they're somewhat ambiguous as to what they are doing. Curious to know how WMA might be spreading to the younger contingent.
Hobbits...well any kid prior to 7th grade makes an acceptable hobbit...after that, the behavior is much more sturm and drang...they're better then at being marauding hordes...

I have also seen that website- very interesting stuff, also could be a good way to introduce youngsters to the ideas and concepts behind RMA-

That is...unless you're 19, 5'4ish, and a hairy little beast like me <img src="/forum/images/icons/cool.gif" alt="" /> . LET THE HOBBITS RULE!!!!!!

As an after comment, at the end I was asked by one of the adults, “Why practice this?” I replied, “To get good at it.” The questioner then asked, “Why?” Without missing a second I responded with a smile, “So that we enjoy our practice even more.”
