Wow. I really think someone from this organization should set up shop in hollywood and just do swordfights. Send actors to a 1.0 and the like.

yeah...you mean to film real fights? I've thought of that before...say you want "goodguy" to win, well you just keep sparring till he really does!!

Ugh! That is some craptastic fencing! All the fighting in the "Highlander" movies and TV shows made me cringe. Absolutely terrible, especially when Sean Connery's character is "teaching" Cristopher Lambert. Ugh...I'm getting queazy just thinking about it...losing conciousness...must log off.

"No other series presented and preserved the art and traditions of swordsmanship with HIGHLANDER’s unparalleled levels of integrity and honor."
More like no other series (actually there are other plenty of other series, but) distorted and mystified the art of swordfighting by presenting many of the very myths and misconceptions that ARMA and other organizations are trying to dispell.
Ugh, the edge bashing and the cutting with rapiers. And bad acting.
Exuse me while I wash my eyes out with sand.

Oh well, there are times when it's good not to have television.

Having never seen the show, that little clip made me profoundly glad I haven't seen it...and provided a certain impetus to practice...even here in oblivion...some of us know better...

Even though I am in no way excusing the bad fighitng, there are some other elements that come into play when doing fight choreography. Having done this type of thing on a few independent films I can attest that there are alot of struggles that the martial artists normally isnt aware of. I've been toying with the idea of compliling a bunch of my notes on the subject into book form. But yeah, theres no excuse for stuff that bad.

You should write an article for the website on this issue. I'm sure it will be very informative to those of us who have no exposure to the theatrical side.

I thought about it, but it was decided that was going in a direction that isnt really what ARMA is all about. Though we adress issues of techniques that are (or arent) used in film, we arent really about doing fight choreographers. I'd do it and post it somewhere else but I really dont know where. I suppose I could email it to whoever was interested. But I dont want to give the impression that ARMA is about fight choreography.

We actually have an old article on this subject. Might be worth revisiting:

Yeah it's a good article- I just dont think he really practices what he preaches. Unless the directors are constantly telling him to make them fight more rediculous.

Ya know, I really enjoyed the katana in the logo at the top! <img src="/forum/images/icons/laugh.gif" alt="" />

And the "rapier" (extra emphasis on the quotes) movies really made me laugh

Hmm, I think I understand what John Clements was getting at in Medieval Swordsmanship (on stage-combat) now. "Blood-groove" indeed. <img src="/forum/images/icons/tongue.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/icons/grin.gif" alt="" />
"I know nothing."
