Talhoffer's terms?

Postby Nathan Dexter » Thu Apr 20, 2006 8:58 pm

Hello again,
I was reading Talhoffer, and encountered some things that need clarifying:
1. Frankish stance
2.Swabian stance
3. Open stance
Also does the ARMA have any picture to go with the words
Thanks
Nathan

I don't know where you were reading, but our book is the translation by Mark Rector. It is 90% plates (pictures) with captions translated into English, added notes, and the original text at the back of the book. It's available online and I even saw it last time I was at Barnes & Noble in the military history area.
Which plates did you get those terms from? I don't know the terms offhand, but can look them up in our book and describe them to you.

Which Talhoffer are you reading?

Hergsell's edition of the 1443 version can be found at Escrime Ancienne.

The 1459 version, including transcription, is available at the Freywild site.

The 1467 version, with images, transcription, and French translation, and I believe here at ARMA you can find an English translation.

I do not know what the open stance is, but I believe the Franconian and Swabian "stances" (I think a literal translation would be "rights") refers to the form of the duel - the former with the club, the latter with the sword.

Cheers
