Recommend a text on paleography?

Postby MurrayMoore » Tue Mar 18, 2003 5:51 pm

Hi all.

Have any of you checked out any of the books on paleography which are available? (Paleography is the study of scripts and handwriting.)

Maybe it's just me, but I cannot seem to be able to even transcribe, much less begin to understand some of the manuals. I've studied German, Russian and Spanish (to various levels), but the decoding of the handwriting is tough.

No one has ever mentioned this on the ARMA site, but now that I've admitted it, has anyone ever actually seen or studied from a paleography text?

Thanks,
Murray

P.S. 2 books I saw on Amazon:

"Latin Paleogrpahy" by Bernard Bischoff

and

"The Medeival Book" by Barbara Shailor

I did find this site. There are many examples of script with probably hundreds of examples of individual transcribed characters.

What's interesting is how many ways the letter "a" was writeen, for example.
