Middle Tennessee Study Day now Oct 7!

Postby Jake_Norwood » Thu Sep 21, 2006 5:38 am

All,

I'm putting out an open invite to get together and do some ARMA training at or near my home in Clarksville, TN on Saturday, Sept 30th. Exact time TBD, but probably about 9 or 10 am. I currently have no plan if it rains heavily, so watch the weather. It often rains here, but not often for long.

Interested parties should contact me at my email at jacobnorwood(at)gmail(dot)com with the phrase "ARMA Study Day" in the subject. Then I'll send you my phone and address information if you need it.

Training will be informal and will mostly consist of me getting back into practice with as many people as will let me try to bludgeon them to death for several hours. If you're travelling a long way I'll make it worth your while, though.

The event is for ARMA members, however non-ARMA members can come to see what it's all about if brought by an ARMA member (like a sponsor). Youth members are welcome with a guardian or an adult member "sponsor" with a waiver.

Uniform is standard red-and-black for ARMA members and white-and-black for visitors.

Bring your wasters, steel swords, padded swords, sparring equipment, books, and anything else. All (ARMA appropriate) weapons are welcome.

We'll do lunch and dinner in the area, very probably at one of Clarksville's many fine buffets. Bring some money to eat. Water will be provided at the event location.

Price for the event is free! (Unless you want to bribe me)

Jake

We'll be there. We might even bring you your stuff when we come.

Welcome home!

I'm sorry to say the Smith clan from Tullahoma will be taking a trip to my father's in Peachtree City, GA that weekend.
My father has given our son his pool table and that is the only weekend for picking it up.
Good news is next time we host down here there will be something else to do with long sticks at our house. ~80)

I'll pass it on to the other members.

I'm sorry to say that I can't make it because of baby duty.

Well, now, should we move it back a week? Columbus day weekend? We could do it the 6th or the 7th, if that was the case. Thoughts?

That would probably work better for me, but don't move things on my account. Of course adding in the Smith clan would make a difference.

Is anyone else travelling from far enough away to need lodging? What are the recommended options?

I don't imagine a sunday is an option? I work Fridays from 3-11pm.

October's not available for the Smith Clan.
I will keep the others posted so they can be in touch with you though.

Good news is we've taken down the playground and we have been working on filling low spots in the yard. By the end of October I should have a couple pells in place. We have two of the large coconut mats painted and nailed to the fence already.

I'm still waiting to find out when my sister's pining is. If she pins on her star (Army, General) in December we can host here the weekend before or after Thanksgiving. If she pins in November we ( or just me) will be in Hawaii for the ceremony.

Take down one playground and put up another!

Congratulations to your sister! I guess they don't "blood rank" generals.

Okay, I've moved the date to the 7th of October. Anyone who still wants to come on the 30th is welcome to, but it won't be such a large affair.

I just sent out my first email. For those that didn't get it or who wanted it but haven't contacted me yet, here's the gist (minus my address...for that you must email me at gmail).

Middle TN Study Day October 7th

The current plan is to start warming up a 0900 (er, 9am) with a review of the most basic basics of the longsword and the ARMA methodology. Brand new people (especially those of you in the KY/TN area) are strongly encouraged to attend this. Things should be moving full-swing by 10am with a lunch break around 1 or 2 (when it's hottest) at a nearby Clarksville restaurant. Training will then go until everyone is done...probably around 5 or 6 pm, with the capstone "exercise" being freeplay and sparring.

Tentative curriculum will be:
9:00 - Warm up/ARMA Fundamentals (with the Long Sword)...AKA "Drinking with the Fire Hose"
10:00 - Footwork and Core Movements (with the Touch Drill)
11:00 - Longsword techniques and exercises
12:30 - Longsword test cutting and freeplay/sparring
1:30 - Lunch
3:00 - Dagger/Ringen training
4:00 - Staff drills and light free-play
5:00 - Open sparring/Free play
6:00 - Dinner/go home

This is *wide open* to changes based on moods, weather, preferences, equipment, attendance (availble instructors), etc. If you have something you would like to present, teach, or be taught, let me know and we'll work it in. If you will only be able to attend for a portion of the event let me know--it shouldn't be a problem.

What to Bring

* Uniform is standard ARMA red-and-black for Associate Members and Study Groups. For non-ARMA members uniform is a white T-Shirt (no logos, please) and black sweatpants or other athletic pants. Breech-style pants are welcome, as are black shorts if you can't take the heat. If you have already submitted your ARMA membership application you may attend in either a red or white T-Shirt, as you prefer.
* Weapons: Wasters, steel swords (blunts and sharps), bucklers, staffs, rapiers, daggers (waster, rubber, paper, real), and all manner of sparring weapons are strongly encouraged. I have a limited number of loaner equipment which should be sufficient for attendees that don't have their own yet. If you've got loaner equipment to add to the pile, please bring it. I also have a few prototype commercial sparring weapons for us to "test" and review.
* Protective Gear: Bring whatever you have. Helmets, fencing masks, knee and elbow pads, gloves, chest protectors for females (if you have them), groin cups for males, etc. are all strongly encouraged. Gloves, especially for new folks, are highly recommended to prevent blistering early on.
* Test Cutting Materials: It's pumpkin season. For about $5 you can get a pretty massive gourd, which makes an excellent cutting target. Bring your own materials to cut (I'll have a stand here) or email me and I'll pick up a few pumpkins for you (at your expense). We'll have a few steel swords, blunts and sharps, which you can use to cut with if you don't have your own.
* Other: Camelbaks, Gatorade, first aid kits, camcorders and cameras (limited filming options will be available). Money for lunch and dinner (we usually go out to eat as a group at the end of the night).

Email me for more info or to RSVP at jacobnorwood (at) gmail (dot) com.

I would absolutely love to attend, but alas, I too will be out-of-town. If only it were on Sunday... grrr….

As I have told everyone previously, I am I the process to moving to Texas, and while I am still around in the Nashville area at the moment, I am heading to Texas this Tuesday, where I will meet up with my wife April for a few days (she has already started work down there).

Anyway, I will be retuning on the 7th, but I won’t get in until sometime that evening. From that point, I will be around until the 13th or 14th to oversee the movers, then I’ll be gone for good.

Alas, Parting is such sweet sorrow....
On the road again....
Good bye, farewell, Auf Wiedersehen,....

Till our paths cross again, we shall meet in cyberspace. Safe trip, good luck in you new job, and may your children make many good friends!

Your piano playing inspired our son. He had been thinking about lessons and wanting to learn. After seeing how much fun you had being able to walk in and play, he is now taking lessons. Thank you!
