I attended the Minneapolis seminar hosted by ARMA Twin Cities weekend before last. It started Friday night with a side trip to Arms and Armor, where we all got to see their shop, handle their wares, discuss historical and modern smithing realities, and socialize. The capstone of the evening was handling four swords from the Oakeshotte collection, including two Viking pieces, a gorgeous mortuary sword, and (my favorite) a "knightly" sword that fit my hand perfectly, feeling like an extension of my arm. The seminar was very interesting. By the end of the weekend, I had a much better understanding of basic sword mechanics, footwork, and the Mastercuts. John also provided much additional info on related aspects of history, culture, application, technological development, etc. Physically, Sunday was the most taxing day, but for me the hard work really helped the lessons sink home.
Sparring Aaron (from Appleton, WI) was a special treat, and I only walked away with 2-3 lumps on my head. *grin* Aaron did a great job assisting with demonstrations and instruction, and I look forward to working with him again.
John - I appreciated our conversation over dinner Saturday night, especially the story about the Filipino "secret Big Stick style" - LOL! The info you shared about historical Euro-Japanese military interactions was also fascinating. Your passion for history is astounding, and I hope you consider pursuing a Ph.D. of your own!
To those who came from out of town - thanks for coming and sharing your enthusiasm! I enjoyed meeting all of you, and hope to train with you again.
