New Englsh training group

Postby Ross Dean » Sat Apr 26, 2003 8:21 am

Anyone living in the west of England may be interested in the following:

I would like to announce a new Historical European Martial Arts study group that will begin during late May 2003 in the North Devon area of England. It will be called Schola Gladiatoria West and the parent group is Matt Easton’s Schola Gladiatoria based in London, UK. Schola Gladiatoria

We will concentrate on the Fiore die Liberi's work (Getty version) with the lead of Matt Easton while leaning heavily on the translation and interpretation work of Matt and Eleonora Litta (also of Schola Gladiatoria) and the experience of Chris Webb (my Countercut partner). The aim is to establish a study group (rather than an instructor-led group) with local people who may not have considered WMA before. The "West" refers to the west of England - a distinct and ancient region of Britain.

The lead of our parent group Schola Gladiatoria is fundamental but the influence and ideas of other groups will be utilised and fully acknowledged. The resources of the ARMA website will be essential to the success of the group.

If you would like to take part or receive further information, please email me at ross@countercut.com for further information. All participants must be 18 years old or over.

Very nice. Will Fiore be the only master of study? I still don't understand how folks only train on one master when there is such a wealth of knowledge from the other masters of defense. Perhaps Fiore is a starter for those in the group and working up from there?

The new translation I have read on Fiore is impressive and great knowledge to work with.

Good luck, I hope to Matt Easton some day.

Cheers,

Hi Todd

Fiore will be our main master of study. There is a wealth of information in the Getty version and years of study ahead. Other masters, of course, will be studied not least because we are working from an historical text and even the most complete historical text can not provide the modern practitioner with a rounded understanding. Fiore will be the primary and main master, however, because I prefer to work as much as possible from one point in history and to work with an historically recognisable single system of study. As you say, though, there is a wealth of knowledge from the other sources that we need to use to compliment and expand on the knowledge and techniques provided in the Fiore texts.

Yes, I can definatly see where your coming from. I think, IMO, anyone starting WMA should start with Fiore. You have a wide arrange of various techniques to learn from such as long sword to wresting to dagger. I remember showing Rick Tucci in Princeton some of Fiore's plates and he was shocked that europe had these fighting arts. I need to get my arse down to NYC and look at one of the originals.

One of these days I need to get across the pond <img src="/forum/images/icons/smirk.gif" alt="" />

I'm interested, if the group's closed enough to me or trains over the weekend! I'm based in Warminister, Wiltshire so maybe London is easier for me to get to.....
Ooooops should have added that I'm more interested in later stuff, 17th Century to be honest........But never mind....Brain the size of a planet and just can't find the on switch
