What's with all the spam?

Postby Sam Nankivell » Sun Apr 08, 2007 3:27 pm

Does anyone else notice how we are getting a fair amount of spam now?

I only recently joined the forums, however, I have been aware of ARMA for about two years and have been viewing the forums for around the same time. It has only been recently that we seem to be getting all of these pornography ads.

It's been going on in spurts for a while. Gene has to personally research each site and download all photos before he deletes the posts.

Is it not possible to add some filters? Then certain postings that have "questionable" language could be reviewed prior allowing them to be added. Postings that pass the filters go on automatically. I know it's possible but I don't know how it's done or what is required.

Just a thought...

i think this issue can only be resolved by hacking off mouse hands with rusty machetes.

I understand there to be three possibilities:
1. Require administrator approval for all registrations. This is usually not good, as people who come here to ask a question usually want to ask the question now, not in a few hours or a day after an admin has gone through and approved the user.

2. Update the image verification software. There is an image that appears at registration to stop bots from creating accounts. Unfortunately, advertisers have figured out how to go around them. If there is an update (I don't know if there is) to the image software, it might keep a 'step ahead' of the spammers.

3. It's possible to add on another "image" verification type element to the registration page in phpBB. I did this on my forum, and there haven't been any spam posts since - nil.

Unfortunately, it took me a while to figure it out, and I didn't write down the procedure. I'll look around the web and see if I can find anything easier.

So far it's been managed well without the above, though - spam messages are constantly deleted. So thanks for putting in that effort - it's a lot of time and a big annoyance, I'm sure.

Well, my semi-absentee webmasters repeatedly tell me its a net wide issue, anti spam software is in an endless battle with spammers. I don't know. Not a tech guy myself.
