New ARMA Study Group in NYC

Postby David_Knight » Wed Jul 23, 2008 12:34 pm

I recently relocated to NYC and JC has suggested that I start a new Study Group here.

For those who don't know me, I am an ARMA Free Scholar, researcher, and co-author of Polearms of Paulus Hector Mair. I was an assistant instructor for ARMA South Florida and taught classes on Mair's shortstaff at the 2005 Florida Gathering and 2005 Western Martial Arts Student Symposium at BYU. I also cross-train heavily in MMA and have three years' experience as a MMA instructor (with an emphasis on grappling). I am currently working on a translation of Mair's ringen chapter for both self-defense and competitive applications. You can find several of my "Ringen am Schwert" videos on YouTube.

Please reply here, PM me or contact me directly at knight@paulushectormair.com if you are interested in training. I would like to hold 2-hour evening sessions at least twice a week in McCarren Park in Greenpoint/Williamsburg (L train at Bedford or G at Nassau), though times and locations may vary according to who contacts me.

Ooo, maybe some of us at the New Jersey study group could meet up with you some time. I'll bring this up during our meeting tonight.

Congradulations David! I will make it a point to look you up the next time I am in NYC! I wish you all the best with your new study group.

For those in the New York area who do not know David or who might not have had the opportunity to work with him, He is a great guy and an excellent teacher!

Hey David...

I am up in New England right now for a spell... If you PM me sometime as to when you train on the weekends, I wouldn't mind blasting down to the city a time or two each month to train with you folks.

I've received a very promising response thus far and hope to hold our first session in a week or two.

Could those interested (even if you can only make it occasionally) please email me with your contact info? I'm going to put a database and an email list together.

ARMA NYC is up and running! Our first session was today and it went very well. All the attendees were new to ARMA and didn't have wasters, so we worked ringen techniques from Codex Wallerstein and Mair. Everyone is looking forward to the next session later this week.

Roger Soucy and I are also working to set up monthly all-day gatherings in Staten Island for those on SI or in NJ who can't normally make it up to Brooklyn. I'll post dates for those as soon as we work out the logistics.

We have an elist set up as well. If you're in the NYC area and want to subscribe, go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ARMA_NYC
