Twerhaw, Dobringer 27V

Postby Chris Ouellet » Sun Dec 06, 2009 12:41 pm

I've been reading Dobringer's Lichtenaur carefully of late and I'd like to know the current interpretation ARMA uses for the cross-strike. Any decent video-examples of 27V Twerhaw?
It's a horizontal slash but I can envision two hand positions and he makes mention that the hand is turned.

Those can be helpful. I'm not working out of Doby right now, so I can't comment.

^^ That picture should show what you are looking for.

The cut is made with the short edge (back edge of the blade) so you turn your hands to cut with that rather than the long edge (front edge) like you would with a normal strike. Putting your thumb on the flat of the blade helps (like shown in the picture).

Actually a zwerchau can be made with either the true or false edge on both sides, we just have a tendency to favor the false edge version, probably because it's more difficult to teach (or just because we like it). It's mainly defined by being a horizontal cut made from vom tag or kron, with your hands at or above head level.

Thanks for the correction Stacy, I actually did not know that. I tried out a few cuts and I see how it can be achieved with either edge.

Cheers,

Kevin
