Using Red oak for wasters?

I was wondering what others who have more experience and have maybe tried Red oak what they thought. I was going to use it for Dussack wasters. How well will it hold up?

Chris Holloman had some he made out of red oak. He told me he would prefer hickory though. I made my first one not too long ago out of hickory heartwood and it is doing real good.
Some bowyers make bows from straight grained red oak boards they buy at Home Depot. I haven't tried that yet.
My opinion, for what it is worth, is that red oak is definately usable but hickory is better.
White oak on the other hand would be very similar to hickory in density and toughness.

I have a red oak staff, and it's slightly warped. Red oak is porous, so you need to make sure you seal it off from moisture with some kind of oil or varnish or something. It's got a nice heft to it, which I like. My other red oak staff was broken during a prize play.

All my oak wasters have splintered up. They worked for a while, but hickory will be a much stronger alternative.
